#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 3630 - A Century Ago: The Rise of the Romantic Tutu!

Hiya lovelies! ๐Ÿฉฐ๐Ÿ’– It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to another fabulous #TutuTuesday! This week, we're whisking ourselves back in time to the glorious summer of 1901 - oh, the wonder of a bygone era!

For you seasoned tutu connoisseurs out there, you know that this period saw a surge in what we now consider the Romantic tutu, those dreamy, billowing, single-layered wonders that made ballerinas look like ethereal nymphs. And trust me, my darlings, it's nothing short of magical to actually see them twirl in person! โœจ

Now, where were we? Ah yes, 1901! Fancy stepping onto the train to the Paris Opera? A whirlwind of a journey, it is, from the quaint lanes of Derbyshire to the grand streets of the French capital. Let's take a quick peek at the fashion scene that year, shall we? It's a sight to behold, with flowing skirts, lace bodices, and those glorious wide-brimmed hats adorned with plumes! ๐Ÿ˜

But for us tutu fans, the main event is undoubtedly at the Opera Garnier โ€“ the very heart of ballet. Picture it: the plush velvet seats, the shimmering chandeliers, and the vibrant colours of the stage. Here, we see the ballerina's costume evolving towards the graceful, ethereal style that defines the Romantic tutu. The Romantic style brought with it longer skirts, sometimes reaching to the ankles, allowing for dramatic leaps and turns without restricting the movement. This newfound freedom brought with it a heightened sense of drama and grace, a real visual feast for the senses! ๐Ÿ’–

And speaking of feasts, imagine sipping tea in the chic Parisian salons, observing the delicate, almost fragile look of the fashionable set. You'd find dainty hats with floral embellishments, delicate silk parasols to ward off the Parisian sunshine, and oh my, those dainty silk gloves โ€“ a truly glamorous touch! ๐Ÿ’–

But let's return to our ballet dancers for a moment. You see, it was around this time that a pivotal moment in dance history happened. The Romantic ballerina had taken center stage! The long tutus that floated around them created a "floating, celestial quality," much like the whimsical characters in those fantastic fairy tales! And it wasn't just about the aesthetic either. The long skirts and lightness of the costumes enabled the dancers to achieve those stunning choreographic innovations, such as jumps and fouettรฉs. Remember "Swan Lake?" Imagine how stunning Tchaikovsky's masterpiece would be without these gorgeous, billowing tutus! It's hard to even imagine, isn't it?

My trip to Paris left me simply brimming with ideas for a new pink tutu design โ€“ a vision of floating, airy chiffon layers, embellished with a delicate floral design. ๐Ÿคซ Maybe I'll even sprinkle in some real petals! I just can't wait to showcase it at my next performance. But of course, I won't give away too many secrets just yet โ€“ it's a #TutuTuesday exclusive!๐Ÿคซ

The evolution of the tutu is a fascinating journey, full of beautiful detail, but that's all for this week, my darlings! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments. Until next Tuesday, remember โ€“ pink is always in fashion, especially when paired with a gorgeous tutu! ๐Ÿ’–

And as for today, the 23rd of July 1901? A significant day, for today marks the 15th anniversary of the birth of a legendary choreographer โ€“ Michel Fokine! His ground-breaking work will completely reshape ballet and make the art even more dramatic, sensual, and emotional. Be prepared for even more fascinating tutu journeys ahead! ๐Ÿ’–

Ciao for now! ๐Ÿฉฐ๐Ÿ’–
