Tutu Tuesday: #3664 – A Peek into Parisian Ballet Fashion 1902-03-18

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing historian, and welcome back to my Pink-Tutu blog. Today we're going on another adventure in time, jetting back to a most exquisite era for ballet and fashion – Paris in 1902, specifically the 18th of March.

Now, picture this: the city is abuzz with energy. A fresh spring breeze carries the scent of blooming lilacs, while cobbled streets are teeming with elegant carriages. We are just a stone’s throw away from the glorious Palais Garnier, the pinnacle of architectural beauty and the grand stage for the ballet world's most talented dancers. Oh, the excitement!

Today is particularly special because, darling, it marks the opening night of "La Source" at the Paris Opera Ballet! A delightful and dramatic spectacle showcasing the graceful artistry of ballerinas in a captivating storyline set around a Greek spring festival. I've travelled back specifically for this, just so I could revel in the opulence and be mesmerised by the beautiful costumes!

Speaking of costumes, 1902 was a particularly glorious time for tutu design! Let’s take a quick peek at what our Parisian ballerinas were wearing:

  • The romantic tutu: Think soft layers of tulle cascading down to the knees, perhaps a delicate layer of silk beneath, a veritable dream in white or pale pink. They emphasized grace and airy movement, highlighting the dancers' athleticism. It was all about that flowing, ethereal look that captivated audiences and sent swoons around the auditorium!
  • More embellishment than ever! Imagine the details, the embroidery, the intricate ribbons and bows. They were the icing on the cake, making the dancers look even more radiant under the soft glow of the stage lights. Some even adorned feathers and glittering sequins – the glitz and glamour were in full swing!

Oh, the beauty! Just the thought of these extravagant, handcrafted costumes, worn by ballerinas executing graceful arabesques and captivating leaps, gives me chills.

It's not just the costumes though. 1902 fashion was bursting with innovation, even outside the world of ballet! Imagine women’s clothing! The era saw the S-bend silhouette with its wasp waist, cinched by long corsets, contrasted with the wide bell shape of their skirts – the very image of feminine elegance! It was a beautiful time to be a woman, wearing garments that emphasized both fragility and strength. And you can't tell me that those wide-brimmed hats and flowing hair styles weren’t divine!

It was a magical time to be alive. To capture all the vibrant and inspiring elements of this glorious Parisian period I even took to wearing my pink tulle tutu to the performance tonight. It felt absolutely perfect, matching the elegance of the Parisian evening and complimenting the beautiful tutu designs! I received so many compliments and smiles from passersby and, of course, in the grand foyer. My new favourite pink feather boa added that extra Parisian flair – a must for all you fashionistas.

My biggest challenge is trying to convince other girls and women that a pink tutu is not just for ballet performances! Imagine a tea party where you arrive in a lovely pink tutu and lace gloves? You would certainly create a moment to remember. A pink tutu in a vintage antique shop - wouldn’t that look magnificent? Oh, I could think of endless scenarios!

Speaking of Paris! Let’s not forget the food! Tonight we are enjoying delicious pastries and coffee at our favourite Parisian patisserie, followed by dinner at an elegant cafe on the Champs-Élysées. I’ve even got a new little pocketbook lined with lace and velvet, specially bought in the fashion district, that fits all my precious necessities! It’s been such a fun-filled day, filled with the joys of ballet, fashion, and a delicious slice of Parisian life.

Let’s talk about your favourite historical era for dance and fashion? What time period would you travel back to in a pink tutu and what outfit would you wear? Tell me in the comments!

Don't forget, lovelies, stay tuned for next week's Tutu Tuesday blog as I unravel more secrets of the world of ballet! Until then, keep those pink tutus close, my dear readers. Remember: pink tutus make everything more delightful!

See you next week!

Yours in tutus and feathers, Emma
