#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - June 10th, 1902
Hello lovelies! Emma here, back for another #TutuTuesday journey into the enchanting world of ballet tutus! Itâs my mission to spread the joy of tutus â and pink ones, especially! â across time and space, and I wouldnât be a true ballerina without a little travel and a touch of history, wouldnât you agree? So, grab a cuppa, darling, and let's waltz back to 1902 together.
A Whirl Through Time
Now, I don't mean to toot my own horn (though my tutus definitely are doing the tooting, let me tell you!), but this blog is becoming quite the little hit. In fact, this is post number 3676 for my Ballet Tutu History series, posted once a week on Tuesday over at www.pink-tutu.com. And to think, it all started when I found myself inexplicably transported through time while en route to see a new ballet in London â the joys of a life well-danced! Ever since, I've been popping about through the ages, soaking up the tutus, the fashion, and the utterly fabulous history of ballet.
London Calling!
June 10th, 1902 - that's where we find ourselves this week, and oh my, darling, London is truly a delight. Think cobbled streets, grand theatres, and a buzz of energy you can practically smell! Just imagining the grandeur of Covent Garden with its beautiful Victorian architecture. And let's not forget the bustling streets of Piccadilly where the latest fashion is all the rage. Oh, the sartorial dreams! I've been told that they are having the biggest shopping extravaganza happening in London, a truly glorious event known as âThe White Cityâ! It promises to be a grand spectacle and a true testament to the innovative spirit of the times.
The Tutus of 1902
Now, the ballerinas of this era were all about elegance and refinement. We're talking soft tulle skirts, layers of delicate fabric, and, of course, the unmistakable touch of romance. Think of the romantic styles in Diaghilevâs Les Sylphides. They certainly didnât shy away from the frills and fancies! And I love a bit of frill! And, speaking of romance, the pink is quite dreamy this year, very soft and delicate. And they are just a little bit shorter than the tutus I love, more revealing of the legs â perhaps not quite my style, but quite stylish nevertheless!
I hear that Marie Taglioniâs tutu, a symbol of grace and lightness, is the talk of the town! She revolutionised ballet fashion, a vision in gossamer beauty, and letâs face it, everyone else followed suit (quite literally, you could say). She wasn't afraid to embrace the lightness and elegance of ballet and bring a new kind of beauty to the stage.
My Tutu Picks of the Week
For you ladies with a penchant for the past, and a love for all things pink, I've put together my very own Tutu Tuesday Picks! Here's my selection of what to look for when browsing the boudoirs and ateliers of 1902:
The classic, soft tulle tutu: Think of soft whispers of tulle and graceful layers of delicate fabric. Think Marie Taglioni. You just canât go wrong with that look!
A touch of trim and embroidery: The more embellishment the better, darling! The more sparkly and glamorous, the better. And letâs not forget the perfect pearl for added sparkle. Itâs a feminine touch for every occasion!
A splash of colour: Whilst the ballet dancers are often seen in delicate hues, why not consider a vibrant pink in your own life, or maybe a touch of pale peach or lilac? Remember, tutus aren't confined to the stage; you can let them fly in the real world too!
*But letâs not forget the heart of the matter⌠*
And what about you, dear readers? How have tutus played a role in your lives? Do you adore the elegance and flow of a traditional tulle tutu? Or have you a passion for contemporary designs? Perhaps youâre embracing tutus for their fun and joyful essence â youâre in the right place, my friend. Tell me about it all! Donât forget to tag your tutu stories on social media with #TutuTuesday and #PinkTutu â you can bet your bottom tutu I'm always on the lookout for inspiration.
Remember, dear readers, Life is a stage, and with the right tutu, we can all dance to the rhythm of our hearts.
Till next week! Stay sassy, darling!
Your Tutu loving Emma
PS. I'm so excited about my next trip - I hear Vienna is truly exquisite. The grandeur of the ballet companies there are truly unmatched! Oh, I do hope they have lots of pink to see! But Iâll keep you posted!
