Tutu Tuesday #3708: A Blast from the Past - January 20th, 1903! 🩰💖
Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, where the only rule is: wear pink and twirl! Today, we're hopping back in the time machine for another #TutuTuesday journey into the captivating history of the ballet tutu. We're landing right smack-dab in the year 1903, so grab your finest teacups and join me as we peek behind the velvet curtains of the past...
Paris, Mon Amour: We're kicking off our historical escapade in the City of Lights, where fashion reigns supreme. January 20th, 1903 saw Paris bustling with Parisian elegance and style. And wouldn't you know it, the ballet was an integral part of that very same elegance! Imagine – beautiful women twirling on stage in lavish costumes, their tutus floating and flowing with the grace of swans, the shimmering silks reflecting the Parisian sun.
The Romantic Tutu: In the early 1900s, the Romantic ballet era was in full swing, and you'll often find tutus were long and flowing, embracing a whimsical, airy feel. Think lightweight, dreamy, and yes – pink! My oh my, a lovely pink tulle tutu dancing under the warm stage lights – it’s simply heavenly! Imagine yourself as one of those enchanting ballerinas, dancing with effortless elegance and enchanting every audience member with your effortless grace. I dare say, a bit of a pink tutu goes a long way in charming the Parisian crowds!
Inspiration for the Modern Tutu: Now, fast forward to today. While we may see tutus of all colours and styles, let's give credit where credit is due! The romantic tutus of 1903, like the ethereal creations by legendary ballet choreographer Marius Petipa, helped pave the way for the modern tutus we see gracing stages today. Even now, I can spot a hint of those whimsical, floating lines in a contemporary tutu!
Let's Take a Dance Break!: But enough about history, darling, let’s dance! Here’s my favourite routine for a romantic tutu waltz:
(Time-travelling Emma demonstrates a simple but graceful waltz step with her pink tutu flowing behind her, showing how a modern dancer could take inspiration from the styles of the 1900s and apply it to today's contemporary dance.)
Fashion's Favourite
If you’re a true tutu enthusiast like me, you'll know how a little touch of ballet glamour never goes amiss! You don't need a stage to wear a tutu, lovelies, you can wear it just about anywhere. Now, even though you might not find long, romantic tutus easily, try pairing a tutu skirt with a tailored blouse for a graceful and stylish touch, a pop of pink, a dash of dance-inspired elegance, and an injection of femininity! The tutu has a certain captivating power, wouldn't you agree?
What Was on the Stage?: Speaking of elegance and captivating performances, it’s time to share what caught my eye this week! While time-travelling through the year 1903, I couldn’t resist seeing what dance masterpieces were enthralling audiences. A visit to the beautiful Palais Garnier in Paris showed off the brilliance of the ballerina, Mlle. Carlotta Grisi, starring in a production of "Giselle". The sheer spectacle of a performance by Mlle Grisi in a flowing white tutu against the backdrop of the Grand Opera House – truly unforgettable! It’s said she danced with such grace and power – you know I'd love to have been in the audience myself! I’ve just got to take another time travel trip back to Paris, it’s certainly calling me…
Oh, Paris, Paris! My travels have left me with a feeling of delightful energy! And now I must confess to having indulged in some Parisian fashion shopping before I travelled back to the future. Don't worry – you won't be missing out, as I’m planning a separate post detailing the trends and fashion discoveries I made on this very trip! So keep a lookout for it on Pink-Tutu.com – it’s coming soon!
Twirl Away, darlings! I hope you loved reading about the past of our dearest tutu. Tell me about your favourite tutus in the comments below!
Yours in tutus, Emma xx
