#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through Ballet History - March 31st, 1903!
Hello lovelies, and welcome to #TutuTuesday, post number 3718 on www.pink-tutu.com! This week, we’re taking a little trip back in time to March 31st, 1903, and I can already feel the excitement bubbling up!
As always, I’ve hopped aboard the time-travelling train – my favourite form of transport, especially when it’s dressed up with a fabulous pink tutu! My luggage is overflowing with the most glorious vintage garments from Derbyshire, ready to transport me right back to the Edwardian era. Just imagine – lavish hats with feathers, elegant lace gloves, and, of course, beautiful gowns that would make any ballerina swoon.
Speaking of swooning, 1903 was a truly remarkable time for ballet! The world was just beginning to rediscover the enchantment of ballet, thanks to a Russian dancer named Anna Pavlova. This absolutely incredible woman was on tour across Europe, dazzling audiences with her exquisite technique and ethereal beauty.
Imagine the crowds, their hearts filled with a kind of awe and wonder as Pavlova took the stage! The lights would dim, casting an ethereal glow on the elegant theatre – probably all plush velvet and gilded balconies.
Imagine the costumes too, lovelies – the soft, flowing materials, the shimmering tulle, and, of course, the iconic tutus! Back then, they were a bit different from the ones we wear today, but equally as graceful and elegant, crafted from layers of tulle and adorned with intricate decorations.
In 1903, I can almost feel the anticipation bubbling in the air. I would have been utterly captivated! Imagine having the privilege to be in the audience, watching Pavlova's ballets. "The Dying Swan," for example, was an emotional rollercoaster, showcasing Pavlova's raw talent and emotional depth. Talk about a heart-wrenching spectacle!
On March 31st, 1903, however, Pavlova would not have been dancing on stage! I believe she would have been in St. Petersburg, the jewel of Russia. But, just the thought of being there in 1903 – it's a bit magical, isn't it?
But, this week is also all about us. We've got a gorgeous outfit to look at! My vintage 1903 inspired outfit this week is a showstopper! It features a stunning silk ball gown in a dusty rose shade, with layers of shimmering white tulle for a beautiful "butterfly effect." Of course, I've paired it with my trademark pink tutu, just peeking out from beneath the layers of the ballgown.
Oh, and a giant feathered hat is an absolute must, you know!
Let me know your favourite historical era and what you’d wear to match the mood! Do you like it lavish and elegant like 1903 or prefer a touch of rebel with a modern tutu in 1970s style? I’m always happy to hear your thoughts on everything!
So, darling, are you ready to add a touch of ballet to your life this week? Whether you choose to spin, twirl, or simply revel in the beauty of ballet history, embrace your inner ballerina and shine!
Until next #TutuTuesday, Emma x
P.S. I’ll be catching the latest ballet show in London this week – Giselle - and it's got me utterly excited! It's one of my all-time favourite ballets – so dramatic! Keep your eyes peeled on my instagram for photos and snippets of the performance, you lovely lot.
