#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 14th April 1903

Hello my dearest darlings!

It's Emma here, back with another #TutuTuesday, and boy, do I have a treat for you! This week, we're travelling back to 14th April 1903! Can you believe it? It's hard to imagine the world without all the magnificent tutus we have today, isn't it?

And speaking of magnificent tutus, guess what I saw at the ballet this weekend? A whole troupe of dancers twirling in the most beautiful pink tulle skirts you could imagine. It reminded me of all those adorable, frilly pink dresses my mother used to dress me in. You know, before I discovered the beauty of a true tutu! I don't know why everyone isn't wearing a pink tutu all the time - the feeling of twirling in a soft, light-as-air tulle skirt is simply divine!

Anyway, back to 14th April 1903! Imagine, no mass-produced tutus just yet, no easy online ordering. To buy a tutu then, you'd have to make your own - or commission a local seamstress for one. And wouldn't it be fabulous to peek inside a little dressmaker's studio and see them crafting those magnificent costumes?

Speaking of creating our own tutus, my friend Olivia just started a tutu-making class in Derby. It's actually a lot of fun! And she makes the most amazing tutus - her creations are so fluffy and sparkly - just imagine wearing one and twirling across the stage under the dazzling lights of a theatre! Now wouldn't that be an adventure?

Right, back to our history journey. Today marks a day filled with lovely spring breezes in Derbyshire! There's a definite buzz in the air; a promise of flowers, new life, and, of course, beautiful new dresses and maybe even a few new tutus coming to shop windows very soon!

I'm so glad to be exploring this wonderful world of ballet, history and especially tutus with you, my dear readers. And if you haven't already, be sure to head over to the website (www.pink-tutu.com) and join our Tutu Tuesdays' community. It's full of delightful, passionate people just like you! We talk tutus, ballet, fashion, share travel tips, and of course, revel in the joy of wearing our beloved tutus.

Fashion Corner

This week, my eye is caught by this adorable pink bow with tiny sparkly details that I found at a little shop on Piccadilly. Now, how fantastic would it be to add a little pink sparkle to our tutus? Just a hint of pink can transform any outfit!

Fun Fact

You know how people say "pink is a girly colour"? Well, pink was actually considered a boy’s color until the early 20th century! It wasn’t until the 1940s that pink became linked to girlhood and femininity! So remember that the next time someone tries to tell you what you should wear!

On The Rails

This week, I’m hopping aboard the Flying Scotsman for a little journey to London! You see, I’m on the hunt for a particularly delightful, ruffled tutu with tiny, pink flower embellishments! I hear that Liberty's Department Store might have some fabulous creations. Now wouldn’t that be a lovely treat to myself for all my hard work in this blog!

Theatre and the Stage

Last night, I saw the most captivating ballet at the London Coliseum! It was a romantic story set to music by Tchaikovsky. As a huge fan of the Romantic era, I’m mesmerised by this ballet and it truly felt like stepping back in time! Imagine being a dancer at a ballet during the Victorian Era! It’s enough to make any ballerina feel as though they’re part of an enchanting, fantastical story.

I must admit, the costumes in this ballet were magnificent. There was even one character wearing a costume adorned with delicate silk butterflies and a little, flowing pink skirt. I was almost envious of this dancer because it made me realize that sometimes, all you need is a little "hint" of pink to make an outfit beautiful. You know I’m planning to channel that elegant look into one of my upcoming blog posts, so you won’t want to miss out!

Time Travel

Ah, this is the part of my job that’s truly magical - travelling through time! Sometimes it’s a challenge to blend in and travel around. This time, I’m using a beautiful, long pink dress to create a more 1903-esque style, as it’s almost impossible to be completely inconspicuous in these outfits! The secret is all in the subtle tweaks. Think a hair ribbon, some little flowers pinned in my hair and perhaps a tiny touch of pink blush to match. That, plus a smile, and the locals are none the wiser. Isn’t that great? I am living the perfect pink ballet life, all thanks to my travelling abilities and those gorgeous ballet performances.

To conclude my post, don’t forget to keep sharing your Tutu Tuesdays and to join the online community! Tell us all about your favourite tutu moments and your most-cherished dance memories! And until next time, remember to embrace your inner ballerina and let that inner spark of pink dance freely.

Tutu-tastically,

Emma
