#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - September 22nd, 1903!
Hello, darling dears! Emma here, your pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling fashionista, ready to take you on another delightful journey through the world of ballet! It’s #TutuTuesday, and this week we’re stepping back in time to a particularly glorious era – 1903!
Today, I'm sitting at a café in Paris, the city that’s synonymous with elegance and grace. I'm wearing a perfectly fluffy pink tutu, and my hat, covered in adorable feathers, is a triumph of the millinery art! It's the perfect Parisian day, filled with sunshine, chic passersby, and the tantalising aroma of freshly-baked pastries. Just thinking about it makes me want to pirouette!
Today’s topic is extra exciting because, you see, 1903 is right smack in the middle of what’s considered the Golden Age of ballet! Can you imagine, darlings? Ballet, even then, was a captivating performance, and we, lucky souls, were blessed with dancers of extraordinary grace and talent.
Before I dive into the history, let's talk about this gorgeous city. Paris is absolutely teeming with theatre and dance, the air alive with music and excitement. I'm already feeling utterly inspired by the chic boutiques, the artistic galleries, and of course, the captivating shows that grace the grand opera houses! Oh, I could live here for ever, my dears!
Now, back to our main event! So, this date is very significant because it's exactly 25 years after the infamous "Ballet Russes" debuted in Paris! The “Ballet Russes,” founded by the legendary Sergei Diaghilev, took the world by storm with its vibrant and innovative dance styles. Now, if you know your tutu history, then you'll know how much impact this ballet company had. And trust me, it was phenomenal!
For one thing, the "Ballet Russes" challenged the staid classical ballet of the day with an entirely new interpretation of the art. Imagine, costumes, dramatic lighting, and a dynamic, even modern, approach to movement – it was a revolutionary moment in the history of dance.
But it's not all about the "Ballet Russes", you see! This era also saw some of the greatest ballets in history being written and performed! Ballets such as “Giselle”, “Swan Lake”, “The Sleeping Beauty”, “Coppelia”, and "La Sylphide" were enchanting audiences everywhere!
As a little tidbit for my fellow fashion lovers, we can also thank the "Ballet Russes" for inspiring some truly spectacular costumes. They helped push ballet’s wardrobe boundaries! Forget plain, white, boring tutus; the "Ballet Russes" saw vibrant colours, swirling patterns, and bold use of fabric become the new norm! Can you imagine? Imagine dancing on stage wearing vibrant pinks, brilliant blues, and exotic yellows! Absolutely magical!
This is just a little taste of what was going on in the world of ballet in 1903. So much to see, so much to enjoy! My trip to this fascinating year has reminded me once again of the timeless allure and artistry of dance. Now, if you’ll excuse me, darling dears, I’m off to watch some truly captivating dancers, dressed in the most exquisite costumes! I just can't resist a good ballet show!
Now, remember, dear readers, a pink tutu is the perfect outfit for any ballet performance, so, don’t forget to rock your pink and embrace the grace, artistry and elegance of ballet! This has been #TutuTuesday, post number 3743! Do let me know what you think in the comments below, and, be sure to join me next Tuesday for another trip back in time. Until then, dance your hearts out, darling dears!
Yours in pink, Emma xx
