#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History – 1903-10-20

Bonjour, darling tutu enthusiasts! Welcome to #TutuTuesday, the day where we explore the wondrous world of ballet tutus and their fascinating history!

This week, on the 20th of October, 1903, we're taking a trip back to a time when the ballet world was abuzz with excitement! My name is Emma, and as a lover of all things pink and tulle, I'm thrilled to be your guide through this magical time warp. Just like every Tuesday, I'm putting on my very own pink tutu - because what else would one wear on this glorious day, right? – and preparing to whisk you away on another whirlwind tour through ballet history!

Oh, darling, the 1900s was a real treasure trove of exciting new styles in the world of ballet! If you’re a fashion lover like myself, then you know how much of an inspiration it was for the dance world. We’ve come so far, haven’t we?

It's been quite a journey. I had to skip between London and Paris this week. There were so many magnificent shows to see and fashion to behold, and of course, my schedule was chock-a-block with performances!

If you’re ever wondering where to find the most incredible ballet performances, Paris, London, Vienna and even Milan will truly make your jaw drop! Not to mention the joy of stepping onto a train, and soaking in the scenery as you whiz across the countryside… Just like the French trains do! A girl's gotta get around, after all! I travel across Europe, but this time it was from my hometown, Derbyshire in England, to London for an amazing, elegant soirée. It’s always a great excuse for new clothes! The best thing about dressing up is, when you’re at a fabulous event, you really feel like a part of the history!

So, darling, what's on today’s ballet tutu agenda? Well, you wouldn’t believe the treat that was awaiting us at London’s Royal Opera House on this fine October 20th in 1903. Imagine my delight as I sat down, resplendent in a gorgeous new pink creation, to witness “La Bohème,” with music composed by Giacomo Puccini. It’s an absolute classic. A heart-warming story set in Paris, all about love and loss and all things bohemian – simply divine. I couldn't resist snapping up a few extra photographs for you – I just know you'll appreciate the vibrant outfits! It truly feels like you can get swept away by the atmosphere at the opera house! It’s almost enough to make a girl tear up!

Speaking of the opera house, can we just take a moment to appreciate the wonderful tutu designs they use on stage. Those exquisite details and delicate layers, it’s enough to make any ballerina go weak at the knees! The tutu's evolution through history has been just as captivating as the world of fashion outside of the theatre. Remember when ballet began in the Renaissance and we had nothing but a modest “jupe courte” – a shortened skirt, very impractical but the beginning of this magnificent invention! As fashion and dance progressed, the skirt evolved with it, to the magnificent tutus of today. It truly is an evolution of grace, elegance, and feminine beauty.

Don't you wish we could have seen those original performances? My dreams are full of elegant ballerinas and sparkling stages. So darling, are you as passionate as I am about the world of tutus and its history? You'll be amazed by how the tutu has changed with time, just like we've seen this year. Think of it, you can really understand its story! And even with my pink tulle creation and a dash of make-up I feel like I can take a small step back into the glamorous history of our favourite costume! It’s quite easy to take yourself back in time! What makes this design so much fun for me is that there’s such a diversity, depending on the kind of dance style you’re looking at. Oh! How we’ve seen such an incredible array, from the delicate tulle we adore to the “demi-pointe tutu”, and the "tutu-en-table" to the elegant romantic tutu. Every type, every variation brings a whole new facet to our world! It makes me wonder, what will the future of the tutu hold?

But darling, remember I also had my Pink-Tutu London shopping spree in tow! Just for you, my dear followers, I took a trip to one of my favourite haberdasheries - can you believe I actually had a chance to peruse exquisite silks, satins and lace just waiting for their next stage adventure? You just don’t find fabric like this anywhere else, darling. You have to make the trip for it yourself to experience it. You see it all, just shimmering in front of you – ready to be turned into that ultimate, show stopping tutu. Can you feel it? That incredible burst of energy - I just have to get my needles, thread, and my creative flair at the ready! And when I create my masterpiece? Oh my goodness darling, I just have to snap up some photos and post it to Pink-Tutu.com – for your viewing pleasure of course! Isn’t it lovely how tutus, and the art of ballet, just seem to inspire us in our day-to-day lives! I love that feeling!

There are a million and one places in London where you could go, but honestly, a trip through Covent Garden and its charming little shops is truly a treat! Don't get me started on all those vintage and antique shops on the side streets too – the hidden gems! They're so much fun for picking up beautiful things to turn into your "up-cycled" tutu creations - you’d be surprised at how often a beautiful antique piece can add a dramatic touch. The charm of up-cycling never ceases to amaze me - making it an amazing way to save on the shopping budget as well, just like in the “vintage era”! You’ll need to pop into my favourite cafe as well – there’s always the best gossip to be had there and with a hot chocolate you’ve got a great way to take a break from a full day of shopping! Oh, don’t forget the treats and treats, darling, while you’re in Covent Garden too - don’t tell everyone I said that!

Back to our #TutuTuesday ballet history!

You won't believe who else we had the pleasure of seeing in October 1903, none other than Isadora Duncan, the trailblazer of modern dance! She’s a favourite of mine! Isn't she brilliant! This was around the time that Duncan became internationally renowned as an American dancer. And you know what darling? I adore the passion she brings to dance. I can honestly say, watching a Duncan performance is like witnessing history unfold! A vision of feminine grace and sensuality - it’s absolutely incredible. I’d love for all the world to get involved with it! Even if you don't necessarily fancy all that dancing - if you want something truly magical and different – then I encourage you to check out her “modern dance”!

Now, remember darlings, this isn't a trip through the world of fashion and dance, unless I get you to join my #PinkTutu mission to bring joy and sparkle into the world ! There are tutus to wear everywhere you go, and the fun of spreading some fashion inspiration will really turn up the fashion temperature – trust me, you’ll want to wear a tutu every day - I know I do! And why not, darlings? Life is meant for sharing those wonderful experiences of our shared passion and nothing helps make life a little more whimsical than our beautiful creations!

So darling, get your needles out, your pink tulle at the ready, and let's get creative – Remember the #PinkTutu dream: to create beautiful pieces, travel across the world with you, bring people together, inspire creativity, and leave our world a little bit more stylish!
