Tutu Tuesday: #3819 – Back to the Belle Époque!
Hello, darlings! It’s Emma here, back from a whirlwind trip through time, and let me tell you, today’s destination was pure, utter magic! Imagine a world where even the most practical of women are secretly yearning to twirl in a magnificent pink tutu, a world where theatre and music are a vital part of everyday life, a world where fashion is a language everyone understands. Sounds dreamy, right? That, my dears, was the Belle Époque, and I’m here to take you on a journey back to 7 March 1905!
Today, I landed in the heart of Paris, the capital of the world, and the stage where fashion reigns supreme. As soon as I stepped off the train at Gare de Lyon, the atmosphere felt electric – elegant carriages carrying elegantly-dressed ladies whisked by, and street performers filled the air with joyous melodies. My senses were overwhelmed by the symphony of sound, sight, and, of course, scent – the intoxicating aroma of freshly baked pastries mingling with the gentle scent of lavender.
Speaking of scent, imagine my delight as I slipped into my latest acquisition - a gorgeous silk scarf with a stunning floral pattern, bought from the very same shop as Coco Chanel would frequent decades later! Oh, the history that these walls have seen! Now, imagine me in my own dazzling pink tulle tutu - this time, a little shorter than usual, inspired by the fashions of the era – perfectly matching the colour of my scarf! The streets practically bowed down to me, darling! The Parisian ladies were smitten by the shade!
It was a Wednesday, and I made sure to catch a performance at the Opéra Garnier – a magnificent building where history itself feels alive. They were performing a classic piece: La Bohème, that famous tale of young love and artistic aspirations set against a backdrop of Parisian life. What a treat! Every movement, every note was pure drama, the emotion palpable, and I found myself caught in the enchantment, tears welling in my eyes.
But the evening was just beginning, my dears! Later, I wandered the streets of Montmartre, where the Bohemian spirit buzzed in every cobblestone. The cafés, lit by candlelight and filled with lively conversations, drew me in with their allure. Artists of every kind – writers, dancers, painters – were scattered around, their artistic ambitions blazing bright. Even a cheeky little mime danced in his black-and-white stripes and did a wonderful bit imitating a swan in its grace - it was a charming act, and the Parisians loved him!
Now, the main reason I was particularly interested in visiting this time period is because it was such a vital moment in the world of fashion, a period that transformed what we know today as ballet costume!
While the classic tutu had its origins back in the early 1800s, this Belle Époque was when tutus really came into their own. Designers began to explore new shapes and fabrics, adding layers of frills and lace. That's how they achieved a sense of lightness and airiness, accentuating the delicate beauty of a dancer's movements.
On that Wednesday in 1905, Parisian streets buzzed with women clad in elegant corsets and long, sweeping gowns - but under the stylish surface, a trend was brewing. The tutu was finding its place as a symbol of freedom, a representation of feminine beauty unbound, ready to soar through the air. Even if they were hidden beneath the flowing skirts, ladies were feeling the energy of the tutus!
I had the absolute pleasure of stopping by the prestigious House of Worth, the epitome of fashion luxury in that time, and guess what, darlings? There I found the perfect accessory for a woman who craves a touch of elegance – a pair of pearl-encrusted opera gloves in the most delicate blush pink – I knew right then that this piece was destined for a pink tutu enthusiast like me!
As the moonlit night descended upon Paris, I found myself amidst a crowd, swaying to the sweet music of a street musician playing his violin. Oh, the romance, the joie de vivre - the Belle Époque really had a captivating charm, it was impossible to resist the rhythm of the music and the enchanting beauty of the city. I knew that a tutu wouldn’t go amiss on that night, darling! If only I could’ve let it all hang out!
Now, as I write to you from my comfy Derbyshire home, I can’t help but wish that I could bottle up that essence of the Belle Époque. To bring that vibrant energy of fashion, artistry, and romance into the modern day, to ignite the world with a spark of magic! But I know one thing - spreading the pink tutu love will never go out of style!
Now, let me hear from you, dears! Tell me - which historical period would you most love to explore with a pink tutu? Would it be the glittering age of Belle Époque, or another time that speaks to your own personal style? Tell me your thoughts and be sure to leave a comment below!
Remember, keep dancing, stay fabulous, and wear your pink tutu with pride!
Until next Tuesday, Emma xx
