#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1905-04-25
Welcome back to my pink and twirly corner of the internet, darlings! It's your favourite Tutu Tuesday and, just like clockwork, I'm back with another dive into the dazzling history of the tutu.
This week, we're travelling back to April 25th, 1905! Oh, my dear, where do I even begin? The year of the first ever "La Traviata" on a Parisian stage. Can you imagine? A symphony of elegance and beauty, and wouldn't you know it, the ballerina who stole the show was twirling in a glorious tutu. I imagine the gasp of the audience as the light caught those perfect pleats!
Imagine the feeling. You're in the grand theatre, plush velvet seats and all, the orchestra tuning, the scent of old books and expensive perfume hanging in the air, and suddenly, she appears! Our leading lady in a billowing confection of tulle, her every movement a whisper of perfection. You know, the mere idea makes me want to slip into my own tutu and twirl in the moonlight right now.
Speaking of moonlight, that brings us to 1905 London! Yes, the city of smog and double decker buses, but also of the Royal Opera House! Just this month, a spectacular ballet, "La Fille Mal Gardée," danced its way into hearts with its colourful costumes and delicate steps. You can't go wrong with a tutu in this ballet, my dears! So, to all my fellow ballet lovers, a quick journey back to 1905: think those perfect white ballet slippers gliding across the stage, and then, think of them perched within those delightful, fluffy tutus. Simply divine!
But where does a 21st-century ballerina like me fit into all of this? I am so glad you asked, darling. You see, I have the greatest secret: I'm a time-travelling fashionista! I adore history, but it’s not all about cobblestone streets and petticoats – I adore ballet, I adore fashion, and of course, I adore tutus! How do I manage to pop about through time, you ask? My dear, it’s all thanks to my passion for ballet – performing around the globe, gathering my pennies, and… whispering… a very special time-travel ring that only a ballerina can use. Don’t worry, it's a secret, but trust me, my pink tutus have been present at some truly amazing moments in history!
Anyway, back to the heart of the blog: this week's #TutuTuesday, my darlings, is a celebration of tutus in London and Paris! The grand theatres of the past held stories within those perfectly pleated layers of tulle. We need to keep those stories alive! Don’t you agree?
So, get out your best pink tutu, put on some ballet music, and dream of swirling stage lights and endless applause. Let's continue to keep the magic of ballet and its iconic fashion, alive, dear readers. After all, we can all twirl like we’re in the middle of our own history-making ballet, even if it's just in our living rooms, right?
Don’t forget, keep those pink tutus on hand and be sure to pop over to www.pink-tutu.com for next week’s edition of #TutuTuesday.
Until then, I leave you with a thought: Do you ever wear your tutu just to feel like a princess? Let me know in the comments below! And keep dancing, my lovelies, keep dancing!
Emma, the time-travelling tutu enthusiast!
