Tutu Tuesday #3855: A Parisian Peek at 1905 Ballet 🩰💖

Bonjour, darlings! It’s your favourite tutu-tastic time traveller Emma here, bringing you another dose of ballet history straight from the archives (and my time machine, naturally!). This week we're hopping on a train to Paris, a city synonymous with elegance and style, to check out what's happening in the world of ballet on the 14th of November, 1905.

Let me tell you, Paris in 1905 was absolutely buzzing with artistic energy! It was a time of incredible innovation and creativity, and the ballet scene was no exception. Now, if you picture a ballet tutu in 1905, imagine something quite different from our modern-day fluffy beauties! We’re talking layers of tulle, often trimmed with lace and ribbons, flowing in soft romantic lines. Oh, and did I mention the colours? Pale pinks, powder blues, and creamy yellows were all the rage. Honestly, the dancers looked like ethereal nymphs!

But let's talk about the star of the show: the Paris Opéra Ballet! Now, the Opéra Ballet in 1905 was, and still is, considered one of the most prestigious ballet companies in the world. Back then, their productions were full of pomp and ceremony – a real feast for the eyes, filled with grand sets, exquisite costumes, and an abundance of dramatic emotion. Imagine tutus fluttering against velvet curtains, glittering chandeliers, and the music of Tchaikovsky swelling to a crescendo - pure magic!

And wouldn't you know it, a little something special was happening on that very day: the premiere of Sergei Diaghilev’s famous **“Les Fauves,” an innovative and groundbreaking ballet that pushed boundaries and shook up the traditional ballet world. Now, while it was still a long way off, this ballet marks a pivotal point in the evolution of what we call modern ballet. Talk about influential! It showcased the use of bold, expressive movement and an innovative approach to the stage. Imagine ballerinas stepping outside the lines, embracing angular, dynamic movements – such a fascinating departure from the more structured style of the day.

But let's not forget the clothes! The Parisian ladies in 1905 were, to put it mildly, fabulous. They embraced the elegance of the "Belle Epoque" – the turn of the century where society was embracing extravagance and artistry. Long flowing dresses with puffed sleeves and beautiful fabrics, adorned with lace and ribbons – they were living the dream! This is also the era when the corset made a grand return. Imagine wearing those to dance? We wouldn't dare! Thankfully, tutus offered more flexibility than the full-fledged constricting gowns of the day.

I can't tell you how much I would love to be transported back in time to experience the magic of 1905 Paris for myself! To see those tutus swirling in the light of a chandelier, to hear the music fill the air, to mingle with the elegantly dressed Parisians - Oh, my darling! My tutu heart can’t handle it! But thankfully, you can all take a peek into this time via the wonder of this blog.

You can be sure, darling, I'll be spending some of this Tuesday dancing in my own little tutu dreams!

Remember, every day is a Tutu Tuesday, so go forth and embrace your inner ballerina. After all, pink tutus are the secret to a happy heart and a vibrant soul!

Stay chic,

Emma
