#TutuTuesday: A Dance Through Time - 18th September 1906

Welcome back, lovelies! It's your favourite #TutuTuesday time traveler, Emma, here, bursting back into your feed from another magical trip through time.

Number 3899: A Blast From the Past! Oh, the joys of time travel! Imagine my delight when the little train carriage whooshed me into 1906, landing smack-dab in the heart of Paris! The air buzzed with Parisian charm – chic cafes overflowing with laughter, ladies strolling in their elegant hats, and a whiff of delicious croissants in the air. Just picture it, darling: cobbled streets lined with pretty little shops, their windows glittering with art nouveau jewellery and stylish gowns, just calling out to be admired. This era of Paris truly has a certain je ne sais quoi!

Speaking of the "je ne sais quoi", let's talk tutus! It wouldn't be #TutuTuesday without a deep dive into ballet history. You know how much I love my ballet shoes, so, naturally, my first stop had to be the Paris Opera. Now, imagine, the most glorious venue you've ever seen – red velvet, dazzling chandeliers, and gilded ornamentation that sparkled in the gaslight. It truly felt like stepping into a fairytale. And there it was – the most breathtaking sight: a full company of dancers taking centre stage in their gorgeous, billowing, flowing tutus. Ah, I nearly swooned.

The Romance of the "Romanesque" Tutu

They were truly the romantic tutus, you see – those exquisite, flowing skirts that shimmered with every graceful movement. A symphony of sheer fabric, crafted from a single layer of tulle. Back then, the skirts were almost ankle length and incredibly voluminous – just picture a beautiful, billowing cloud of tulle. A touch of grandeur fit for a Parisian ballerina!

You see, the "romanesque" style – think Romanticism! It all began around 1840, with the rise of ballet greats like Marie Taglioni, known for her feather-light, elegant movements. Think a beautiful bird in flight – it's pure artistry. But in this romantic age, everything was about a bit of dreamy nostalgia and the power of beauty! They longed to return to the classical past, so ballet embraced a sense of ethereal grace, perfect for those magnificent romantic tutus!

Tutuminati-ing Time!

Oh my! Do you think it was all fluffy dresses and dreamy performances? Not quite, darling! You see, ballet history is fascinating and complex. Ballet was constantly reinventing itself! Around 1906, when I was visiting, it was starting to experiment with the β€œneo-classical” approach. Think sharper lines, stronger technique and perhaps a slightly more toned-down tulle! And in true "Emma" fashion, I'm just a little obsessed with seeing where that leads! Just imagine - the tutu was beginning to evolve from being a mere romantic icon into a tool of incredible artistry, expression, and storytelling!

What Happened on the 18th September, 1906

Speaking of iconic storytelling – what an exciting day this was in history! 18th September 1906 – it was the opening night for Le Sacre du Printemps in Paris. Can you believe it? An avant-garde piece from Igor Stravinsky, with choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky – a daring masterpiece! I just had to grab some time-travel ticket tickets and pop over to see the choreographer! A real ballet superstar – not just because of his elegant dance steps but for pushing the boundaries of ballet performance.

Fancy a Bit of Fun Fashion?!

So, ladies, what can we learn from the ballet world in 1906, besides tutu style, that can bring a bit of "va-va-voom" into our modern lives? Let me tell you – it's all about those intricate, carefully layered, elegant ensembles. For a 1906 fashion-forward ballerina, it was a perfect mix of feminine style and confident posture. That's our magic mantra for this Tuesday, darlings! Think elegant, sophisticated layers and some graceful touches. Oh, and I couldn't leave Paris without treating myself to a gorgeous, billowing hat!

And speaking of glamour, darling, have you caught the latest "Pink Tutu" Ballet collection from the Paris Opera? These exquisite, vintage-inspired designs are oh-so-lovely – perfectly embracing the grace and flow of the romanesque tutus, all with a splash of modern femininity!
