#TutuTuesday: A Whirlwind Through Time – Ballet Tutu History 1906-11-27! 🩰💖

Hello darlings!

It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing, time-travelling blogger Emma, and today, we're swirling back in time to November 27th, 1906, for a fabulous fashion-filled adventure! 🚂

This week’s #TutuTuesday post is number 3909, which makes it an absolute corker of a blog post!

I absolutely adore going back to this era! It's a world brimming with glamour, intricate designs, and oh, so many breathtaking performances! The ballet world in the early 20th century is something special, my dears, just as lovely and elegant as our modern times. ✨

Imagine: Gaslight streets, elegant theaters, and a sprinkle of Victorian romance… All with a dose of fabulous ballet costumes! You simply cannot get more beautiful! 😍

I feel like I’m stepping straight out of a beautiful oil painting with the fashions from this time – a mix of ethereal femininity and artistic charm! From the bustles to the hats, the corsets to the gloves, and those gorgeous bonnets. It’s all so exquisite! 🌸

So, what were ballet dancers wearing on November 27th, 1906? Let’s go back in time for a proper fashion investigation!

Taking a Tumble Through Time:

Just stepping out of my trusty time-travel train in the heart of Paris, (the world’s beating ballet heart, my dears!), and, darling, the streets are just brimming with inspiration! This time period is pure heaven for someone like me! 🥰

Every theatre is aglow, and the streets are full of women (and gents) getting ready to see a performance at the famous Opéra Garnier or the equally-stunning Théâtre du Châtelet. The bustle of a world about to be entranced by the art of ballet. 💫

I think it’s very important to acknowledge the origins of our amazing tutus. There’s something magical about stepping into a Parisian theater in the early 1900s, darling! Ballet’s long history has left behind a dazzling collection of beautiful costumes, from romantic, layered skirts to the delicate tulle that became the signature ballet tutu! 🤩

*A Glimpse at the Early Tutu: *

From the Romantic period in ballet onwards, ballerinas started moving away from the weighty skirts of earlier styles, embracing lighter and airier fabric to truly enhance the beauty of their moves. Think layers and layers of fine silk, a bit like an ethereal dream! 💫

By the end of the 19th century, this was developing into the shape we associate with the iconic tutu, but remember my lovelies, the real transformation started around the beginning of the 20th century, with the rise of modern ballets, which allowed for freer movement! 🎉

You’ll find some beautiful tutu designs from this time with elaborate embellishments and the intricate handwork that just makes the pieces even more special, but always in an ethereal shade of pink. I’d love to see those hand-sewn jewels and embroidered flowers, though I bet some of them would be tricky to take on the train! 🤭

Speaking of our favourite color, pink! The fashion magazines of 1906 show us that pink was just starting to get a big-time revival – think of soft blush hues and almost candy-like shades! Oh my, how perfectly pretty are these colors in this timeframe. So delicate, so elegant, so wonderfully pretty! 💖

Imagine, ladies, how amazing it must have been to see those shimmering, delicate ballet tutus shimmering under the soft stage lighting. Such exquisite movement! This early 20th-century period just screams glamour and grace, and oh, how I’d love to take a twirl on that elegant Parisian stage with one of these amazing tutus. 💖

Beyond Ballet - Pink Makes its Statement!

Ballet is certainly where my pink passion lies, but pink fashion was in the midst of a comeback in the world outside the theatre. I’d like to point out to my darlings that, for years before the early 20th century, pink was thought of as a shade of red. Can you imagine? It was deemed to be a color with masculine associations! It wasn't seen as the beautiful girly shade that we adore today! 😮

Just picture that, ladies, you know our lovely pale pink shade is considered strong! Now isn’t that fantastic! This just makes my love for the color pink grow stronger! 💖

By 1906, this old idea was being turned completely on its head, and thankfully! It's so beautiful! As I've explored through my travels, there were a number of factors that sparked this resurgence, making pink a favourite for ladies’ clothes. * A growing fashion movement in favour of gentler, lighter colours!

  • A focus on a fresh look with pastel colours, leading to pink's rise in the world of hats, dresses, and yes, darling, even shoes!

  • * And oh yes, the big one! Pink was now considered a shade of white, * a sign of feminine grace and pure beauty! 💕

I'd be willing to bet my favourite pink dancing shoes, my lovelies, that that's partly why pink, in all its glory, has become such a symbol of graceful movements, feminine charm, and well, quite frankly, ultimate happiness! That just feels perfect to me! 💖

My Favourite Spot for Tutu Shopping: Paris, Naturally!

Before I disappear back through time, I simply must tell you about one of my favorite spots in Paris in 1906: the *Grands Magasins! * Think of this as a sprawling fashion wonderland where everything was luxurious and opulent! They are still around today, although I love a blast from the past and my favorite place for buying tutus is always in my time travel train going to the past!

Imagine rows and rows of breathtakingly designed garments. Silks that shimmer with delicate shades of pink, and a stunning collection of lace that just makes my heart soar. Oh, and if I am in luck, I can buy a gorgeous pink straw hat too! 🥰

The stores were known for their luxurious window displays that showcase fashion trends from all over Europe. (It’s where my lovely inspiration to have a pink tutu came from!) And speaking of luxurious designs, have you seen the shoes ladies were wearing this century! I adore a stylish and elegant pair of dancing pumps. 🤩

Now, as a huge ballet fanatic, I must mention a huge milestone that happened on November 27th, 1906. You see, a very special Russian ballet company decided to pay a visit to the famous Opéra Garnier - the Ballets Russes. And oh, did they create quite a stir! It's believed that they gave the audience some extraordinary ballets - so much energy and so much inspiration! Just think how incredible this experience must have been to have witnessed such a stunning company of dancers in beautiful outfits. 💖

Just a brief snapshot, ladies, from my #TutuTuesday time travel. So as we step into the week ahead, be bold, darling. Wear your pink tutus! Embrace a dash of 1906 glamour, a touch of Parisian elegance, and definitely enjoy the magic of the ballet. 🩰

That's all from your time-travelling pink-tutu blogger Emma. Remember, it’s a beautiful world, ladies! Have fun and never, ever be afraid to express your unique style.
