#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Peek into 1906!

Hello darling dears! πŸ©°πŸ’–

It's Emma here, your pink-tutu-clad guide through the whirlwind that is ballet history! Today's #TutuTuesday takes us on a glorious journey back to 1906, a time when the ballet world was absolutely buzzing with exciting new creations and vibrant personalities.

This week, we're dipping our toes (figuratively, of course, in my slightly too-short tutu - darling, you know me!), into the Parisian dance scene. I've just hopped off the train, and trust me, it's utterly magical! Imagine a bustling metropolis with a hint of old-world charm - cobbled streets lined with exquisite boutiques, street performers bringing a sprinkle of magic to every corner, and the air positively thrumming with the energy of creativity.

Speaking of energy, 1906 saw the arrival of an exciting new choreographer - Monsieur Michel Fokine! πŸ’« Now, if you know anything about ballet history, you'll understand why that's such a big deal. Fokine dared to break free from the rigidity of the classical ballet world and, quelle surprise!, infused his work with a dramatic storytelling power that left audiences breathless. He used music that went beyond traditional waltzes and adagios - oh la la! Imagine, ballet set to Stravinsky's fiery rhythms! Fantastique!

Where Ballet Meets Couture πŸ‘—

You know I'm a sucker for fashion! It's a wonderful thing, isn't it? And let me tell you, the fashions in 1906 were divine. The long, flowing skirts were giving off major ballerina vibes! Think flowing silk gowns in muted colours, perhaps with a delicate lace overlay or a touch of sparkle here and there. And oh, the hats! From feathered masterpieces to elegantly draped bonnets - oh, darling, how I long for a little vintage headpiece right now! I'd be looking fab in the 1900s, no doubt about it!

But back to tutus... 😊

While tutus were not quite the center stage stars they are today (well, they are in my eyes, and I know many of you lovely tutu-lovers feel the same!), they were starting to break away from their rigid classical forms. 1906 saw the first experiments with short, wispy tutus, crafted from chiffon and gauze, perfect for Fokine's dynamic, dramatic pieces. Can you imagine, delicate layers of tulle swirling and flowing with each leap and pirouette! Ooh la la, truly divine!

The Ballet's Buzz

Today, I was lucky enough to witness a performance by the renowned Ballets Russes, under the direction of the one and only, Sergei Diaghilev. Imagine! I, Emma, in my vibrant pink tutu, a little slice of modern fashion transported back in time, seated next to a stylish Parisian dame in a magnifique hat and a silk scarf the colour of a dusky rose. Oh, it was fabulous!

We watched Fokine's Les Sylphides - and what a show! It's the perfect example of this movement in ballet history - poetic, light, and oh-so-romantic! The choreography, the costumes, the music… they all wove together in such a way that I practically felt the story! Imagine delicate tutus flitting about the stage, chasing a flickering candle in a moonlit wood, such elegance, such wonder! It was a true artistic awakening, and I practically swooned.

My Love for the Ballet

Honestly, you guys, it's such a treat being a part of these magnificent moments. Even though my mission is to get everyone into pink tutus (of course, with varying degrees of frills and tulle for all our tastes! ) there's nothing quite like watching these masterpieces unfold, knowing I'm witness to a historical event, even for just a day! Oh, it just gives me so much inspiration! You guys know how much I adore costumes! Every new period in history has something exquisite, so fun! Imagine me designing my own ballet show! *The music, the colours, the choreography... Oh, the dream!

Speaking of dreams, remember to check back next Tuesday, dears, for my next #TutuTuesday post, where we'll be traveling even further back in time, but this time it's for historical gossip!! We’ll see you next week, same time, same tutu! πŸ’•

Love always, Emma, The Pink Tutu Ballerina πŸ©°πŸ’–
