#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Whirl Back to 1907!

Post #3936 - June 4th, 1907 - www.pink-tutu.com

Bonjour, mes amies! It's Emma, your pink tutu-wearing time travelling blogger, back with another #TutuTuesday installment, whisking you away on a whirlwind tour of the past! Today, we’re stepping back into the grand era of 1907 - the age of corseted waists, opulent ball gowns, and the sparkling beginnings of the ballet world as we know it!

From the cobbled streets of London to the dazzling stage lights of Paris, ballet was gaining traction, captivating audiences with its elegance and grace. You've got to admit, tutus certainly fit the bill when it comes to grace! But things were a little different in 1907.

Think flowing, romantic tutus - billowing clouds of tulle that swirled and twirled with every plié, jeté and arabesque. These early tutus, were less the perfectly fitted creations we see today and more like soft, airy layers of tulle. They were airy, they were whimsical - like the dreams of little fairies!

I just have to share the feeling – can you imagine being the first to waltz on stage in such a light and ethereal costume, a cloud of pink (oh how I adore the colour!) or a celestial pale blue twirling with you? Talk about feeling like you could truly fly!

It was a different time, when women's roles were largely defined within the household, but there was a real spirit of liberation in the world of dance. It’s inspiring to think of ballerinas on those grand stages, expressing their artistic souls through movement and graceful costume - even in the days before the invention of that modern-day staple – Lycra!

Oh, speaking of inspiration, this time-travelling tutu enthusiast just landed back in Derbyshire! This week I spent hours perusing vintage dance shops - truly an adventure! - looking for any glimpses of the 1907 dance trends I found while travelling. You just never know what treasures you might uncover, tucked away amongst layers of velvet, satin and tulle! It is just heavenly!

Today’s London, buzzing with all its theatres and musicals - such an inspiration to the heart of any ballerina. For this week, I feel drawn to a delicate blush pink tulle. Imagine, that soft tulle swaying around you as you twirl in the light! If only we could capture that graceful motion of the early tutu, even with the brightly coloured tights of today! Maybe one day the fashion world will embrace these romantic designs in a bold and beautiful way, echoing this era! I just love how fashion and dance connect with such strong bonds across history, eh?

But it isn’t all just tutus, you know. This year in 1907, we had a real buzz in ballet - so many groundbreaking ballet productions to choose from! If you were to venture to London this week, you might have seen the delightful Russian Ballet Company performing - and imagine, if you travelled further to Paris - a whole world of dance awaited you.

I have just the most perfect way to finish this week's blog: If you fancy a fun time travelling tutu journey with me this evening, check out your local dance school - and join me as we step back into history through a little pirouette. Even a small “pirouette” at home will evoke that beautiful flow, a little sprinkle of historical magic you could even say!

Now I am off, you know I have a vintage dance boutique to browse! Happy twirling, you darlings! And keep the sparkly tutu vibes flowing, all through the week!
