#TutuTuesday: A Glimpse into Ballet History - 18th June 1907
Bonjour, my dearest tutu-lovers! 🩰 It’s Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing time traveller, ready to whisk you back in time to discover the captivating history of the ballet tutu! Today is a special day for #TutuTuesday, as we travel to the elegant heart of Paris, France, the city that truly embraced the tutu and catapulted it to its iconic status. We're going back to 18th June 1907 – a glorious summer's day bursting with vibrant Parisian life.
(Just a quick note from my usual time – 2023, for all you time-savvy folks! This post is number 3938 for my Tutu Tuesday blog, find it all at www.pink-tutu.com and follow me on Twitter @PinkTutuEmma. It’s an absolute joy to share my passion for tutus and their fascinating history with you every Tuesday!)
Now, let's imagine stepping off the train in Paris in 1907. The streets are bustling with the lively chatter of Parisian life - cabs clip-clopping down the cobblestone streets, the aroma of freshly baked bread and delicate perfumes, and the melodic strains of an accordionist in the distance. Oh, what a glorious time to be alive!
Paris – The Cradle of Tutu Elegance
This Parisian date is a truly special one – it's the day of a glittering performance at the iconic Opéra Garnier. Built in the 19th century, this magnificent theatre is like stepping into a storybook; all ornate chandeliers, majestic golden décor, and plush velvet seats.
This grand spectacle is none other than "La Bayadère", a ballet that captivated audiences with its exotic storyline, stunning sets and costumes. This ballet is one of my absolute favorites - and of course, the most captivating detail has to be the ballerina’s beautiful tutus.
The “La Bayadère” performance would have showcased the beautiful romantic tutus that started gaining popularity during the Romantic era. The graceful, flowing tutus featured tiered, layered tulle and ribbons that floated effortlessly in the air, giving the dancers a lightness and gracefulness. It's just enough of a peek into the magical world of ballet, without being overly extravagant – the perfect mix of elegant and graceful!
I think of these elegant tutus as a celebration of femininity, a burst of tulle delight – a real Parisian delight! They symbolise freedom and a certain sense of fantasy, almost like being swept away to a different world. They encapsulate the beautiful harmony between the power of storytelling and the gracefulness of the human form – and that, my dears, is pure magic.
A Shopping Spree to Remember
After witnessing such a magnificent performance, one simply cannot resist a little shopping! I, for one, adore a Parisian boutique! And what better way to commemorate a #TutuTuesday adventure than with a brand new tutu of your own?
Paris is overflowing with captivating stores where you could find a perfect tutu for a fancy occasion or an evening stroll down the Champs-Élysées. You can picture the sheer silk ribbons, soft tulle, and dazzling beading of each and every tutu – an absolutely stunning visual feast!
While I was back in 1907, I found some breathtaking gowns and jackets to wear while admiring the ballerinas in their tutus, but sadly, not a tutu in sight! Tutus were mainly designed for ballet, so those outside the world of dance wouldn't be lucky enough to don such a beautiful, airy creation! I do love a bold outfit and there are definitely enough ruffles and flowing shapes to be inspired, but even then, my mind would have been on creating the ultimate Pink Tutu. My ultimate mission, after all, is to get everyone rocking a pink tutu!
More Than Just a Skirt - Tutus are Art
Back to 1907, the ballet world was going through an era of change – new techniques, bold choreographers and captivating stories.
But throughout all these changes, the tutu has remained a timeless staple in the ballet world, even evolving to express these new artistic ideas.
Let's face it, a tutu is much more than just a piece of clothing; it's a symbol of dreams, grace, and art itself. Imagine seeing those exquisite tulle masterpieces swish and whirl on stage – truly mesmerizing, don’t you think?
In my time – 2023, even today, you can still find many ballet productions across the world showcasing the magic of the tutu. It’s captivating, timeless and graceful. And believe me, I always make sure to slip on my own pink tutu to every performance I attend – you can never have enough tulle in your life!
(Tip from a time-travelling tutu aficionado - always choose your tutu based on the ballet performance itself, a dramatic ballet calls for a bold, extravagant tutu, while a gentle romantic one would pair better with a flowy, elegant, less extravagant design - keep that in mind the next time you head to a show!)
From France to Your Home
Now, whether you’re in Paris, London or Derbyshire (that’s where I’m from!) the spirit of the tutu is truly universal – an emblem of beauty, creativity, and grace. It’s something that speaks to our dreams, our sense of freedom and wonder.
As I return to my own time, I can’t help but feel a sense of admiration for the artistry, skill and dedication of all the talented ballerinas across time who have graced the stage in beautiful tutus. It's inspiring to remember the heritage and legacy of the tutu - from its humble beginnings to its iconic status today!
Next week we will be diving deeper into the tutu's history - where it all started. So do pop by, get comfy, and enjoy your week of dreamy ballet tutus.
Until next Tuesday! Stay fabulous!
