#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through History - 10th September 1907
Welcome, darlings, to *pink-tutu.com and another edition of your favourite weekly fashion fix, #TutuTuesday! Itās me, Emma, your pink-tutu-clad time travelling guide to the wonderful world of ballet and its fabulous history! *
Oh my, what a whirlwind week I've had! Last week, I was waltzing through Vienna with the Vienna State Opera Ballet, mesmerised by the elegance of the dancers in their gorgeous tutus. This week, though? Well, I'm hopping off a steam train straight from Paris, feeling a little travel-weary but incredibly inspired! Paris, as always, is teeming with sartorial delights and artistic masterpieces, and the energy just gets you twirling! Iāve just come from a private viewing of Diaghilevās Les Sylphides - simply divine, the ethereal choreography and those gorgeous billowing tutus - they just seemed to float on air!
But weāre not here to reminisce about Sylphides today. Weāre diving deep into the world of tutus, because itās #TutuTuesday and today, darlings, weāre whisking you back to 10th September 1907!
Hold on tight, as we take a twirl through history.
The Year of the Romantic Ballerina
You know, 1907 was a very exciting year for ballet, wasnāt it? Imagine, 10th September, 1907 - and what were people talking about? Why, the latest creations from Carlotta Grisi and Fanny Cerrito, the queens of the Romantic ballerina! Now, you might think, "Tut tut, Emma! The romantic era was way before 1907, you darling time-travelling nut!ā Well, yes, it is true, the Romantic era itself was at its height some time before 1907. But 1907 was the year when these ballet pioneers, these iconic ballerinas, were still gracing the stage, still charming audiences, and still inspiring generations of future dancers.
What would 10th September 1907 have looked like?
Imagine, ladies, a theatre ā a glittering ballroom of light and sound - with a beautiful young ballerina gracefully spinning in her perfectly crafted tulle tutu. This soft, romantic tutu with its swirling layers, is so different from the tightly fitted "Russian style" tutus of a few years later - the kind we now see in Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. I bet the audience was breathless watching these elegant āRomanticā ballerinas. Imagine the beauty!
Now, donāt you just love that idea of the long tulle tutu with all those swishes and billows - those ethereal twirls, those delicate lines of silk? You know I do, and Iām sure if we could, you'd all be dancing along in similar styles this week! Ahem!
Back to Reality
But, 1907 wasnāt all ethereal tutus.
Think: the very next year saw Anna Pavlova, with her breathtaking technical precision and captivating stage presence, beginning her career, inspiring another style entirely! It's so important to remember those dancers of that era, for they paved the way for all of us and they gave us our wonderful dance world - all thanks to their talent and skill, their strength and elegance. Itās all in those tutus, darling! They tell such wonderful stories.
Where to See Tutus Today
Are you looking for tutu-inspired fashions today? Well, look no further, my loves! This year, the hottest styles include layers of delicate fabrics - perfect for channeling your inner Romantic ballerina! And what's even better, those stunning romantic tutus are now being seen again on the stage. I was just watching Giselle in London the other day, with its āRomanticā ballet heritage, and I just had to get up on stage and join in! **
Now, what's going to be my *#TutuTuesday for this week?*
Oh, well that's quite easy - the Paris Opera is my next stop! Paris is my absolute favorite city for tutus, all the way back in time! Just seeing the amazing craftsmanship and creativity that the designers are able to weave into their workā¦ well, letās just say, you can imagine my pink tutu practically levitating with delight!
Remember, darlings, thereās no better time than today to go on a tutu adventure.
Get your twirl on, * *Emma
