#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1st October, 1907 (Post #3953)

Bonjour, darlings! Emma here, your trusty guide to the world of tutus, back for another enchanting #TutuTuesday! Today, we're waltzing back in time, our petticoats fluttering with the excitement of a brand new era in dance! Grab your favourite pink feather boa and join me, shall we?

Now, I've always said that tutus are not just garments; they're a magical gateway to other worlds. And, let me tell you, that magic was particularly strong on 1st October 1907! Imagine the scene: Parisian theatres, all aglow with chandeliers and shimmering with anticipation. It's the night of the premiere of Sergei Diaghilev's "Les Sylphides," a ballet so groundbreaking it forever changed the way we view dance.

But before we step into the theatre, let's rewind the clock a bit. In the early 1900s, the world of ballet was pretty set in its ways. We had those grand, sweeping romantic ballets, all grand pas de deux and delicate ballerinas in their long, layered, heavy tutus. And while gorgeous, they weren't exactly the most comfortable or free-flowing.

Enter, our dear Diaghilev, a true visionary with a love for the dramatic! He dreamt of bringing something new to ballet, something fresh, something more fluid and captivating. His "Les Sylphides" was a breath of fresh air, a love letter to the ethereal, with its airy costumes and beautiful, almost abstract movements.

And here's where our tutus come in, dearies! Diaghilev decided to use shorter, more streamlined tutus for his Sylphides. No more weighty layers; these tutus were all about simplicity, fluidity and movement! The dancers could finally soar with grace and elegance, their light and airy costumes making them seem like magical beings, fluttering on the edge of reality.

I've got to admit, I'm a little envious of those 1907 dancers. Imagine the thrill of wearing those light-as-air tutus for the first time! It was like giving dancers wings! No longer were they bound by bulky fabrics, but free to express themselves in ways never seen before. It's like someone finally invented ballet tights! And who knows what fashion trends it started in the streets, perhaps a trend for shorter skirts and lighter fabrics!

Can you picture those amazing silhouettes on the stage? It was a whirlwind of light and delicate movements, a world away from the rigid classic ballets of the time. It was ballet revolution! It truly revolutionised fashion too! I must go on an expedition! Where could I find myself one of these new 1907 fashion style tutus? Perhaps Paris? The heart of Fashion! I have such a shopping addiction...

But you know what? "Les Sylphides" didn't just bring a new style of tutu to ballet; it brought something much more profound - a new way of looking at dance, a new approach to choreography, and a new appreciation for the pure beauty of movement. It set the stage (pardon the pun!) for a new era in dance and, let's be honest, helped pave the way for tutus to take the stage as an icon in dance fashion.

Now, my lovely fashion-loving friends, what did you think of this #TutuTuesday journey through time? Are you itching to get into the magical world of ballet as much as I am? Do you ever imagine what those gorgeous ballerinas in 1907 would have thought if they saw the stunning and amazing tutus we wear today! Don't forget to share your thoughts and your own favourite tutu memories on www.pink-tutu.com and join us next week for another fantastic tutu adventure! Now, off I go to pack my pink-hued suitcase. It’s time for me to visit Paris and hopefully bring back some of that fashion magic to share with you next week. As you know, this isn’t the only date in 1907 where exciting things happened with tutus - 1st October was actually one of the most exciting days, however, I am always looking for new facts. Do tell if you know anything about dance fashion, or fashion in general during this time and leave me a comment below! I do love a good history fact or two. It's the details that really bring the history to life and help us understand what life was like in these fascinating moments in time.

In the meantime, I'll leave you with a thought: What if a pink tutu could time travel? Where would it go, who would it meet? It’s a bit like my blog, I imagine! We get to visit these amazing places in time and learn all about dance fashion in the past and that helps us better understand where we are today and why our amazing and flamboyant tutus have taken the shape and design they do today! Do join me on another adventure soon. And please - remember - every day is a reason to twirl in pink! Au revoir!
