#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: The Glamorous 1900s! 🩰
Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu! It's Tutu Tuesday, the day we delve into the captivating world of ballet tutus, and boy, oh boy, do we have a fabulous journey ahead of us!
As you all know, this week, we're hopping aboard my trusty time machine (don't worry, darling, I always double-check the safety regulations – you wouldn't want to end up stuck in the wrong era, would you?) and taking a trip back to 1907. Can you believe it, dears? We're about to waltz right back to the turn of the century, an age of exquisite elegance and graceful movement!
(Now, wouldn't a delightful pink tutu look absolutely ravishing against a backdrop of those stunningly romantic gardens? I might have to squeeze in a quick shopping spree after we get back!)
Speaking of time travel, I've just finished a mesmerising ballet performance at the Grand Theatre de Bordeaux in France, and my goodness, the costumes were just breath-taking! Now, you wouldn't believe this, dears, but back in those days, the fashion wasn't quite so "en pointe" as what we see today! You might say they were a bit, shall we say, "traditional" in their styles.
Remember Marie Taglioni, darling? She was a ballet icon, an ethereal creature of grace, the epitome of elegant movement! Imagine her swirling and twirling on stage, and you might imagine how ballerinas looked then, long, flowing dresses that whispered stories of fairy tales and enchanted forests.
But hold onto your tiaras, my loves! Change was afoot. A new vision for ballet fashion was taking centre stage - it was time for something lighter, more dynamic! A costume that reflected the lightness of the dancing, like the delicate flutter of butterfly wings.
(Imagine my darling, being able to glide across the stage, almost like I was dancing on air, a ballet dancer’s version of soaring through the clouds!)
Now, the first glimmer of our beloved tutu appeared right at the dawn of the 20th century, a whisper of revolution in the air. Imagine this, darling: instead of cumbersome layers of fabrics, ballerinas were suddenly wearing something lighter, something airy and almost… dare I say it… more revealing. A dress-like skirt that was shorter and lighter, a prelude to the tutus we know and love today!
But darling, it wasn't always about bare legs and short skirts! This shift, this evolution, wasn't just about showing more skin! The movement that started in the 1900s was about freeing the body. It was about releasing ballerinas from the limitations of traditional, long dresses and allowing them to truly express the artistry of their movements, unencumbered.
(How delightful that change can be such a wonderful thing, allowing women to have such beautiful freedom on stage!)
Remember, dear, ballet has always been about stories, about enchanting narratives that take us on captivating journeys! And, these short dresses, these "proto-tutus" if you will, they whispered stories of freedom, of the lightness of dance, of graceful movement unconfined. It was about the dancer telling the story of the character, and being able to portray that through her elegant movement.
(Do you love dancing as much as I do, my lovelies? Don't forget to check out the amazing dancing shows happening near you, it's a magical experience every time, I swear!)
Today, the 19th of November 1907, isn't specifically notable in tutu history. But darling, it’s all part of the bigger picture, the graceful arc of the tutu’s journey to becoming the beloved garment it is today. We are truly witnessing the very beginnings of an icon, a symbol of ballet's evolution.
The future is glittering, my darlings. Think of the beautiful tutus yet to be! The dazzling designs, the fabulous colours (and of course, more pink, of course!) The sheer artistry of this garment!
Now, wouldn't it be glorious to see the future of tutus unfolding right before our very eyes? My time machine is humming with anticipation, darling. We'll be back next week to explore the glorious past of ballet's most iconic garment.
And in the meantime, darling, why not join me in celebrating the magic of tutus and ballet by getting your own dance party going at home? After all, you know I always say… A life without a pink tutu is a life wasted!
Stay twirling, darling! Until next Tuesday, this is your dearest Emma, signing off! 💕🩰
