#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1908-03-17 π©°πΈ
Hello, darling dears! Welcome back to another delightful #TutuTuesday edition of my Ballet Tutu History blog! Itβs your favourite pink-loving, tutu-wearing blogger, Emma, bringing you the very best in historical tutu tidbits. This week, we're taking a little trip back to 1908, the year my grandmother would have been born! Such a thrilling time for tutus!
Today's date, 17th March 1908, is a special one because, just think, the Paris Opera Ballet was celebrating its 200th anniversary! Can you imagine? Two whole centuries of balletic brilliance! My goodness, what a feat, especially in those pre-train, pre-airplane, pre-everything days. I shudder to think about how long it would have taken me to get to Paris to see their gorgeous costumes and graceful movements!
However, there's another reason 17th March 1908 deserves a pink tutu twirl! It's the very day our beloved tutus were really taking centre stage β think a bit more en pointe and a lot less stuffy! I'm not saying they weren't magnificent before, but in 1908, we're talking a reimagining of the tutu! Imagine beautiful billowing fabrics and elegant lines! Gone were the days of those overly restrictive, almost corset-like skirts. This new style was lighter, more flowy, a celebration of movement and grace, just like the ballerinas who wore them. This shift in tutu design really reflected a broader trend towards greater freedom and movement in fashion. Think flowing dresses, lighter fabrics, and a growing appreciation for the feminine silhouette! Isn't it absolutely glorious?
My dear reader, 1908 also witnessed the start of a dance craze sweeping the globe: The Foxtrot! Can you believe it? This stylish new dance β just perfect for a dance-tastic, twirly, girly, tutu-fied occasion! It made a splash at the time and captured hearts with its simple steps, catchy music, and, dare I say it, hint of "naughty." But for me? It's the embodiment of grace and movement, perfectly complimented by our newest, airier tutus!
Speaking of dancing, I'm positively giddy thinking about all the dazzling ballet productions happening in London! Imagine my delight β seeing Pavlova grace the stage, captivating everyone with her exquisite movements! Her incredible work and style absolutely embodied that new, more fluid and airy vision of the tutu! Oh, the memories... The beautiful choreography, the sweeping fabrics, the mesmerising movements, it just left me wanting more!
As a lover of all things vintage, it's incredibly fascinating for me to be a time traveller and see how ballet and tutu style evolve. And trust me, my little bloggy dears, those beautiful, light tutus became more prevalent over the years, becoming even more stunning and whimsical with time. Oh, how the tutus have changed! From those rather stiff, heavier versions of yore, the designs were getting more elaborate! Imagine tull β you know, that dreamy lightweight fabric β in the softest hues of pink and lavender, swishing gracefully with every twirl and jump! Honestly, it just *makes me want to get out my sewing machine and try some historical recreation on my own! Could I possibly channel the spirit of those beautiful ballerinas with my own DIY tutu creations? I just love getting to reimagine those elegant looks and share them with you all!
I remember just the other day, I went to the London Ballet and had such a wonderful time watching a beautiful ballet performance, even managing to see a lovely pa de deux. Oh, and have you seen all the beautiful floral adornments being added to those graceful designs? Such exquisite flowers! From the delicate and lovely to those large, lavish blossoms. They add such a captivating touch, just the right amount of dainty detail to each performance! They perfectly capture the magic and beauty of a time when art, style and grace danced hand in hand.
Right, my dears, it's time for me to go and find myself another vintage pink tutu, so I can show off my style in this beautiful historical moment! And don't forget β #TutuTuesday is a time for you to shine too! Grab a sparkly headband, wear your fanciest dress, and channel your inner ballerina, because a tutu isn't just a garment β it's an attitude, a spirit, and a way to let your inner glamour shine!
Catch you all next week for another thrilling trip through ballet's exciting history! Until then, twirl with confidence and always keep your Tutu Spirit shining bright! ππΈ
Love, Emma
