#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1908-10-27 - Post 4009 🩰

Hello my dearest Tutu Tribe! It's your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina blogger Emma here, bringing you another captivating delve into the enchanting history of our beloved tutus. Today we're whisking ourselves back to 27th October 1908, a day that, believe it or not, saw a significant change in the world of ballet. But first, let me tell you about my incredible journey!

My trip this week was quite the whirlwind, and let's just say I certainly lived it up! After hopping on a sleek new train in Derbyshire, I made my way to none other than Paris. The City of Lights! Oh, how I adore the bustling energy and charming cafés of this fantastic city! Of course, no Parisian escapade would be complete without a spot of shopping. I found the most divine pink velvet evening bag at Galeries Lafayette. Honestly, my darling readers, it was like it was meant for me!

But as you know, the most important part of any trip for this little ballerina is, of course, the ballet! Oh, the performances I saw! My absolute favourite was the premiere of "Les Sylphides" by Michel Fokine at the Théâtre du Châtelet. You can imagine, dear reader, my sheer delight to be in the audience for this truly magnificent ballet!

Back to Our Tutu Timeline:

Now, 27th October 1908 may not ring any bells for you on the ballet timeline. You'd be forgiven for thinking it was just another Tuesday! But hold your horses, because behind this seemingly ordinary date, lurks a small but vital twist in the tale of our beloved tutus.

You see, dear friends, up until this point, ballet tutus were mostly created from multiple layers of stiff, scratchy tulle. They were quite frankly, terribly uncomfortable, but looked rather lovely. This, however, was changing. Thanks to a revolutionary development, dancers could now breathe freely while wearing their graceful attire. Can you guess what that was? It was, my lovely darlings, the invention of elastic!

This simple but ingenious material changed the game. Gone were the days of painfully tight and itchy undergarments. From this point forward, the new elastic materials made it possible for dancers to create lighter, more comfortable, and infinitely more graceful tutus. Not to mention a much more delightful experience on stage, where they could express themselves fully without restriction!

This development led to new designs, even lighter fabrications and, importantly, a revolution in how tutus were seen and worn! As you can imagine, the world of ballet rejoiced. Imagine, a tutu you could dance and leap in? What joy for every dancer on stage!

I think we can safely say that elastic was the little detail that had a HUGE impact on ballet history, allowing dancers to express their grace and skill with newfound ease! Who knew elastic would be the key to unlocking a new era of elegant movement for these talented performers?

Pink Tutu Inspiration:

Now, let's talk about inspiring outfits for this very special #TutuTuesday! To honour our amazing tutus, why not wear pink? To embrace this 1908 vibe, perhaps try pairing a delicate blush-toned tutu with a dainty vintage blouse or lace-edged top, accentuating this elegant look with some classic pearl earrings or a matching pink velvet hat, like mine!

You see, my friends, I am determined to share my passion for pink tutus with the whole world! Every Tuesday is a new opportunity to spread the magic! Who knows? Maybe one day, we'll all be waltzing through life in our own exquisite pink tutus, embracing the joy of movement and sharing a beautiful expression of femininity!

I can't wait to share my next trip with you all, and don't forget to leave a comment below with your thoughts on elastic, its impact on ballet history, or just what your favourite pink outfit is! Until then, stay graceful, stay stylish, and remember, everyone looks absolutely amazing in pink!

Yours truly,

Emma
