#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - April 6th, 1909 - Post #4032

Bonjour, my darling tutu enthusiasts! It's Emma, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina, back for another thrilling #TutuTuesday adventure! Today, we're whisking ourselves back to the dazzling world of ballet in April of 1909, a period when the stage was truly set for a dazzling display of dance and fashion!

My darling tutus are so excited to be in Paris, the very heart of dance and style. You just can’t beat Paris for its romance, its chic boutiques, and oh my goodness, the performances are divine! I recently witnessed a stunning performance by the illustrious Ballets Russes at the Théâtre du Châtelet and my tutus almost went into a frenzy with excitement! Those costumes, my dears, are positively exquisite. The vibrant colours, the shimmering sequins, the exquisitely-crafted layers, they are a sight to behold!

Now, while the Ballets Russes were thrilling the audiences with their groundbreaking performances, back in London, another little ballet sensation was starting to bloom. The Ballet Club, founded just the year before by the charismatic and utterly fabulous, Madame Adeline Genée, was captivating audiences with their graceful performances and showcasing an incredible new style of dancing that emphasized elegance and light footwork.

It’s such a joyous thing to see ballet making such huge leaps! We've got stunning performances in Paris, blossoming troupes in London and dance schools flourishing across Europe. Oh, how times have changed since the humble beginnings of ballet in the 16th century! Those early dancers performed in a mere frock-like dress that could hardly be considered practical, let alone elegant!

And then came the iconic tutu - a name taken from the tulle, a type of sheer fabric woven by the famous Marie Antoinette - that gave the world a fashion phenomenon! This is truly where the tutu story starts to get interesting! Initially, this revolutionary garment was just a simple layer of soft tulle worn by male dancers for extra elegance and poise. It really wouldn't have been thought of as being so incredibly beautiful at the time.

However, with the introduction of the "Romantic Ballet" in the early 19th century, the tutu started its true transformation. Dancers began using their tutus to express stories and emotions, swirling and dancing with such an effortless beauty that stole the hearts of the world. The graceful tutu allowed the dancers to truly embody the freedom of the movement, showing off the feminine elegance of each dancer.

From the classic knee-length tutu with its soft flounces of tulle, to the poulette, the short fluffy version we adore, the tutu’s evolution has been thrilling. But of course, for the truly passionate ballerina (and especially me!), the tutu has become a powerful symbol of passion, grace, and feminine expression, not just in dance but in everyday life too!

Speaking of fashion, oh my, are we living in a golden age! I spent an afternoon simply indulging myself in a fabulous Parisian shopping spree. I discovered a charming little boutique near the Seine that has the most delightful collection of fabrics – a haven for a tutu enthusiast like me. I’m absolutely smitten with some new additions for my collection. Oh, you've just got to wait until I post pictures, you will be swooning with joy!

I found some beautiful pale pink tulle with exquisite embellishments. My tutus will look utterly divine in that. And oh my, what about that soft lilac taffeta I spotted for my petticoats? Oh my goodness, I am in heaven! But of course, I don't neglect the practicalities of a time-travelling ballerina. I even bought a darling little travel-trunk adorned with roses. It'll make packing a lot easier and I imagine it'll be absolutely stunning beside my collection.

Talking of travelling, did I tell you that my last ballet trip was to Rome, my dear! Oh my goodness, it was spectacular! The Italian ballet has an infectious energy and joy. But even in the most beautiful Italian cities, I still crave my own home.

Oh my darling tutus, don't you agree that a bit of the Derbyshire countryside and its quaint villages would be a delightful respite from our dazzling Parisian adventure? We do so love our time in Europe, with the theatre performances, the boutiques, the stunning architecture and those amazing ballet productions! But there’s something special about coming home after a long adventure, don't you think?

Right, well, darling tutus, that's all for today! But be sure to catch my next blog post! My time-travelling journey may be continuing, but your journey to tutu joy can begin any time! Head over to your local dance shop, try on some amazing tutus, or even just whip out your own, and get ready to swirl, dance, and celebrate the fabulous world of ballet! And don't forget to keep that pink tutu close, you darling little dreamers! I’ll be seeing you soon!

P.S. As a little treat, I’m sharing a fabulous vintage photo of an early 1900s ballerina with a beautiful tutu and so much elegance. This one is definitely inspiring me for my next shopping trip! What do you think?
