#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Peek into 1909
Hello, darling tutus!
Welcome to another #TutuTuesday on www.pink-tutu.com. It’s me, Emma, your favourite Derbyshire pink tutu enthusiast, coming at you live (well, time-travelled!) from… drumroll… Paris! Yes, the city of love, croissants, and oh-la-la chic style, is where I've landed this week, thanks to my ever-reliable, tutus-powered time machine!
Now, this week’s #TutuTuesday is a bit special because we're venturing into the early 1900s - specifically, 22nd June 1909! Let me tell you, 1909 is all about the romantic ballet. Think dreamy costumes, flowing skirts, and a touch of mystery. Tutus, my dears, were really coming into their own!
The ballet world in 1909 was bustling, a melting pot of creative styles and a flurry of tutus. And today is particularly special because, get this: It's the day Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes gave its first performance in Paris! Yes, that’s right! The legendary Russian company with choreographers like Nijinsky who revolutionized dance and brought an entirely new aesthetic to the Parisian stage was in full swing.
To put it simply, Paris was the place to be if you were a fan of ballet. This is where Anna Pavlova and Vaslav Nijinsky (two names that still send shivers down my spine, and make me twirl like nobody’s watching) were doing their magic.
Now, what was a Parisian ballerina wearing in 1909?
Think soft, flowing fabrics like tulle and silk, often with intricate embroidery, feathers, and dazzling jewels for that touch of "extra" we all love. I even heard tell of some gorgeous tutus made with layers of silk ribbons, swirling like clouds around the dancers. Talk about drama!
The tutus in this era were all about accentuating the dancer’s every movement, adding a layer of dreamy grace and elegant flow to their dance. Imagine a pink, fluffy cloud, my loves! The essence of feminine charm! And we can all agree that feminine is a wonderful thing.
Of course, I had to indulge in a bit of shopping for my own collection! Let’s just say I couldn’t resist a little black velvet ensemble with a lace trimmed tulle tutu. And naturally, the piece de resistance: A gorgeous Parisian pink tutu!
Today’s Parisian ballet world still has a special allure, I’m telling you! It's about the whole package, isn't it? Beautiful tutus, grand stages, captivating stories, and of course, that French "je ne sais quoi."
Oh! Speaking of grand stages, I saw a spectacular performance at the Opéra Garnier! It was like something out of a dream - imagine a grand old building adorned with beautiful marble and gold details, filled with people dressed in their finest outfits, and dancing in the most magnificent tutus you can imagine. I can’t believe how incredibly lucky I am to see these beautiful ballet shows! And imagine, all these incredible memories are just another day for me.
Oh, I almost forgot to tell you! This entire escapade has given me an amazing idea! For next week's #TutuTuesday blog, I'm thinking we explore a very special tutu. Think of the grandest ballet tradition, the pinnacle of ballerinas’ ambitions. I can’t give away too much, but let’s just say it has sparkling jewels and is associated with something very beautiful. Stay tuned, darling tutus!
But now, it’s time for me to catch a train back to Derbyshire - all aboard, the tutu express is departing - before my time travel visa runs out.
Until next week, stay beautiful and keep dreaming in pink!
Love and tutus,
Emma
