#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1909-10-19

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, bringing you another fabulous foray into the fascinating world of ballet history. Grab a cuppa and a pink cupcake, and settle in, because today we're whisking back to October 19th, 1909!

Paris - The Heart of the Tutu Universe

As always, my dear readers, our #TutuTuesday adventures lead us straight to Paris, the dazzling heart of ballet. This week, imagine me perched on the grand staircase of the Opéra Garnier, my own delicate pink tutu swirling with excitement as I anticipate the performance later tonight! Today marks a special day in ballet history, with "Le Sacre du Printemps", that extraordinary work by Igor Stravinsky, taking the stage for the very first time! Now, this particular ballet is rather infamous for its bold, modern choreography that quite literally shook things up!

Think revolutionary! Bold colours, dynamic movements, and a distinct rejection of traditional balletic form. Although its initial reception was met with controversy and uproar, "Le Sacre du Printemps" paved the way for radical changes in ballet's expression, and a little birdy told me it's even enjoying quite the revival today. Oh how times do change!

Tutus of the Time - Elegant, but With a Pinch of Freedom

While we're delving into history, let's consider what a tutu looked like in 1909. Remember, tutus of this period were still rather rigid and grand. Think of tiers and tiers of tulle, painstakingly layered and held aloft by elaborate stays. This grand formality had its elegance, I'll give you that!

But it was also a testament to a more restricted, conservative style. We're a far cry from the sleek, modern tutus worn by today's dancers, but that’s part of the magic! Think of each tutu as a miniature window into its own era, a snapshot of a dancer's elegance and strength within a particular period. Isn't it thrilling how fashion speaks so eloquently through time?

My Outfit of the Day (OOTD!)

And speaking of tutus, darling, just a peek at my own exquisite outfit for the evening! Imagine the most breathtaking shade of pink, soft as spun sugar, flowing and billowing around my knees! It’s adorned with delicate lace trim and just the right touch of sparkles to catch the glittering lights of the Opéra Garnier.

And the best part? My favourite feathered beret in a vibrant magenta! (You know I adore a matching colour palette, don't you?) Of course, every tutu-lover knows that no outfit is complete without the most dazzling ballet pumps. A touch of gold glitter is all you need to step into a Parisian waltz with style!

Fashion Shopping Adventure - Parisian Chic!

Before the performance, of course, I couldn’t resist a jaunt through the Parisian shops, my pink tutu flowing alongside the latest Parisian fashions! (I simply can't pass up the chance to soak up the fashion inspiration). My eyes sparkled with delight! It’s a real treat to browse through shops like Printemps or La Samaritaine, witnessing the creations of esteemed designers like Coco Chanel!

Now, I couldn't leave Paris without a gorgeous new scarf. And do you know what caught my eye? A vibrant blue paisley print that was practically calling out to me from the display! Can’t wait to style it with my various tutus for an absolutely divine contrast. Fashion is truly about taking chances, dear friends, and embracing bold colour combinations!

A Night at the Ballet!

As evening descends on the city of lights, the magnificent Opéra Garnier transforms into a dazzling world of music and movement. Imagine, the soft rustling of tulle as hundreds of ballerinas pirouette gracefully across the stage. My senses are overloaded with pure beauty and joy! I practically levitate with excitement!

This week, I'm particularly thrilled to be seeing "Le Sacre du Printemps." Although I love traditional ballets with all my heart, a good dose of revolutionary spirit is always a treat! It’s exhilarating to witness the daring moves and bold costumes – it truly feels as though one is experiencing a glimpse into the future of ballet. I must say, my inner ballerina is buzzing with the thrill of this daring performance!
