#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - December 27th, 1910 (Post #4122)

Hello darlings! It’s Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, ready to whisk you away on a delightful journey through the history of the ballet tutu! As you all know, this lovely little garment has undergone quite the transformation over the years. This Tuesday, we're stepping back to December 27th, 1910, a day buzzing with anticipation for a brand new ballet season in the vibrant city of Paris!

Paris, The Capital of Tutu Fashion!

Just imagine! I'm sitting here, sipping my afternoon tea in a cosy cafe just off the Champs-Élysées, watching the chic Parisian ladies go by. It's positively enchanting! Paris is undoubtedly the epicentre of ballet and, let's be honest, the place where the tutu truly blossomed into its fabulous form. You can’t visit Paris without visiting the stunning Opéra Garnier! And, oh, darling, that majestic building – the home to some of the most magical and beautiful performances. And speaking of enchanting, we simply must speak about the ballet dancers and their breathtaking tutus, the pinnacle of elegance! The way they move so gracefully across the stage, swirling like clouds of pink and white... pure artistry!

From Romanticist Flounces to Short and Sweet

But the tutus we see today didn't always have this exquisite shape. The journey to the classic tutu has been a delightful one! Just a century or so ago, dancers were wearing Romantic tutus. Picture this: swirling layers upon layers of flowing fabric, creating a romantic and dreamy aesthetic.

Of course, in those times, even in my home country, Derbyshire, we loved a romantic style in a beautiful dance dress, it was the fashion, wasn't it! But as dance evolved, so did the shape of the tutu. As time rolled by, the dancers needed more freedom of movement. Out with the billowing skirt, in with the shorter, lighter tutus!

You can't blame them. We need to be able to leap and twirl!

And it's this streamlined style that eventually took the world by storm, becoming the iconic look of classical ballet that we all adore today!

A Peek Inside the Opéra Garnier

But back to our lovely Paris! On December 27th, 1910, the excitement was palpable at the Opéra Garnier! The season opening was a huge event. The halls were alive with buzzing anticipation, elegant gowns and glittering jewels were on full display. There’s no feeling like the anticipation before a show!

I bet everyone had their eyes peeled for those dazzling tutus!

Can you picture it? Those magnificent ballerinas twirling and leaping in their captivating costumes. Oh, the spectacle! Imagine the graceful arabesques and impossibly high leaps. Each movement, a beautiful piece of art!

Taking Inspiration from Paris to Derbyshire

Of course, we here in Derbyshire are a little too far from Paris to see that magic firsthand. However, with a little imagination and a dash of pink tulle, we can create our own Paris right at home! Even today, all those years later, when you visit a ballet performance in Derbyshire, there is an unspoken sense of romance and elegant grace on the stage. Just a touch of Paris on the stage.

Pink Tutu's Weekly Shopping Spree: Finding the Perfect Tutu

So, if you're looking to add a touch of ballet to your wardrobe, why not try on a little pink tutu yourself? There’s nothing more enchanting than a dance inspired wardrobe! You don’t need to wait for the opera ballet to find inspiration, darling.

Every Tuesday, I’ll be exploring some of my favorite shops for beautiful tutus, not just in Derbyshire, but around the globe! After all, Paris may be the capital of the tutu, but London and New York are no slouches!

I love browsing those lovely shops in Harrods or Fortnum and Mason, or discovering the latest designs in Macy's and Bergdorf Goodman! We don’t just get to enjoy the show, but the fashion, darling! After all, a tutu isn't just a garment. It’s a symbol of joy, grace and of course, a symbol of the amazing beauty of ballet! I hope this #TutuTuesday inspires you to step outside your comfort zone and embrace the pink tutu! Because after all, wouldn’t you love a dash of Paris in your everyday wardrobe?
