#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 9th April 1912 - Post Number 4189

Hello darling tutu lovers! It’s me, Emma, your time-traveling fashionista from Derbyshire, ready to take you on a journey back to the grand world of 1912 and uncover the secrets of the tutu’s fascinating past!

The sun is shining here in Paris, the city that knows how to wear its charm and glamour like a second skin! The air smells of freshly baked pastries and the streets are buzzing with a heady mix of fashion, artistry, and a touch of mischief. But today, my dears, we’re focusing on the story of the tutu!

Remember that #TutuTuesday is not just about pretty frills! It’s about how these glorious garments have evolved and danced their way into our hearts, reflecting changing trends and artistic expression over time. And, oh darling, this time is a real treat.

As I sip my perfectly chilled rosé (you can’t escape the allure of Parisian life!), let’s go back to the 9th of April 1912! Oh my, what a week! On the 10th, I had the sheer pleasure of seeing a show by the brilliant Anna Pavlova – her movements were a symphony of grace!

This era, my lovelies, saw the world captivated by ballerinas in classic Romantic tutus. These beauties were designed to emphasize a lightness of movement, literally letting the ballerina soar above the stage! It’s about elegance, a symphony of fabrics in delicate layers – the perfect showcase of feminine beauty. Think delicate tulle in layers and layers, ending in a shorter skirt, all swishing and flowing. A perfect way to celebrate femininity.

In 1912, we were on the brink of exciting new artistic developments – think Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes shaking up the scene with their revolutionary modern tutus, making even more daring statement. It’s a reminder that change is the most exciting constant.

On this very day, the iconic designer Paul Poiret was introducing a brand new design revolution, incorporating vibrant colours, flowing shapes, and free movement, influenced by the Ballet Russes, and creating designs for both ballerinas and the fashionable set.

Just imagine, women across the globe are finally enjoying freedom of movement and bold style, even beyond the confines of the stage! The world was a-buzz with fashion and artistry merging, creating exciting and exciting new opportunities for us all! This year we have so many great choices! From traditional ballet shoes to comfortable platforms with glitter or sparkly embroidery. Just what is needed to embrace your own feminine spirit. My, what a time to be alive!

The magic of fashion is a powerful tool, creating a platform for a shared language of elegance and expression.

Let’s keep this amazing story going, darlings! I can’t wait to discover more incredible tutus, meet some fantastic artists, and find out more about what our fashion journey holds next week. I’ll be exploring the amazing world of London theatre, looking at the new shows opening. Who knows what theatrical fashion finds are waiting for me?

As you can see, 1912 was a special year! So, my darlings, I’ll be heading off to shop for the most fabulous new outfit, because, you know me, darling. The latest fashions and beautiful fabrics, always, always a priority. If only we could have the amazing clothes made in my era, my wardrobe would explode, or would it be my wardrobe would grow like a magical garden of stunning designs.

See you all next week for more #TutuTuesday! And remember to wear a pink tutu, darlings, and embrace your own inner fashion icon! Don’t be afraid to wear a tutu in everyday life and let it show off your personality. Don’t worry I have some wonderful online shops where you can find your perfect fit. Let's have a bit of fun with fashion!

Until next time, my lovelies, Emma x
