#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 11th June 1912 - Post Number 4198!

Bonjour mes chĂ©ries! Emma here, your trusty tutu-loving time-traveler, ready to whisk you back to a most delightful time! I’ve just travelled back from 11th June 1912, a positively dreamy day full of frills, feathers, and yes, you guessed it, tutus!

And darling, you won't believe what happened that day! Let's set the scene... It was London, the heart of all things fashionable. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the smell of freshly baked pastries hung in the air... all the perfect ingredients for a sensational afternoon at the theatre!

As a true tutu enthusiast, I had to find the perfect pink one for my adventures, darling. Now, remember, we’re talking 1912, a time when women were daringly experimenting with fashion and showing a little more leg, so I found a beautiful pink tulle creation - a glorious cloud of delicate pink layered over a fitted pink bodice. Just divine! I couldn’t wait to feel it twirling with every step!

The day’s event was a ballet performance at the Royal Opera House, and wouldn’t you know it, a very special premiere! Now, you see, ballet had become so popular by this time that it was practically a craze, darling! The Royal Opera House was jam packed, buzzing with excitement, with every elegant lady wearing their very best creations, and of course, a generous dose of frills and bows!

The highlight? “The Rite of Spring” by Igor Stravinsky was premiering. You could feel the energy in the air. Now, it may not have been everyone’s cuppa, it caused quite a stir, but even if it wasn’t perfectly pretty, it was an example of the bold creative spirit at play, you know? I mean, how wonderful are artists who challenge the ordinary?! That’s what makes ballet so extraordinary!

Oh darling, the performance itself! A vision in movement, full of exquisite costumes and stunning dance moves! The tutu has always been an integral part of ballet, its swirling shapes and movement bringing grace and magic to every performance. The delicate layers and flowing design just add a touch of fairytale wonder, don’t you think? In 1912, it was really all about embracing the dramatic. I particularly loved the way the ballerina’s tutus seemed to almost shimmer in the stage lights - it was like they were stars on the stage, shimmering and dancing under the velvet sky.

But it wasn't just about the stage that day. I was captivated by the glamour in the audience! My goodness, these ladies were all about elegant fashion! Picture this: silks, chiffons, satins and pearls adorning the lovely ladies. They knew how to make an entrance! I felt like I had stepped into a scene straight out of “Downton Abbey”, but with much more sparkle and movement! After all, every woman wanted to look like a ballerina herself! And the men, my dear, looked as charming as always in their impeccable suits! Oh, and the hat situation! Feathers, ribbons, veils – a true fashion feast for the eyes!

And guess what, darling? It wasn't just about looking good – it was about a sense of community and joy. People gathered not just to watch the show, but to revel in the collective energy and beauty of the performance, and yes, even the tutus! It's what makes ballet so special.

Now, my lovelies, even in 1912, not everyone was as passionate about tutus as I am. But don’t let them put you down, darling. If you’ve always dreamed of wearing a pink tutu – go for it! Life is too short to deny yourself the joy of twirling. I always say, you can’t be too pink, or too twirly! It's a reminder that beauty isn't just about following trends – it's about expressing yourself, dancing to your own beat and yes, embracing a little bit of whimsical magic in every step.

Until next week, keep those tutus twirling, my darlings, and remember: the world is your stage! And yes, there’s a pink tutu for every adventure!

Love, Emma
