#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Trip to the Edwardian Era (Blog Post #4202)

Hello my lovely tutu enthusiasts! It's Tuesday, which means it's time for another journey through time to explore the enchanting world of ballet and, of course, the iconic tutu! Today we're going back to a very special year, 1912. Now, I know what you're thinking - "Emma, a trip to 1912?! No way, we won't see any glitzy pink tutus like the ones you love!" Hold on to your tutus, darlings! While the tutus in 1912 may have been a little different, the beauty and magic of the ballet were already alive and flourishing.

Paris, darling, Paris! That's where I am this Tuesday. The City of Lights, the home of chic fashion, and, you guessed it, the very heart of the ballet world. Oh, the stories these cobblestone streets could tell! Can you imagine, strolling down the boulevards of Paris in a gorgeous, full-length gown and a matching feathered hat, making your way to a grand theatre, where the smell of jasmine hangs in the air and the excitement is palpable? That, my lovelies, was the charm of the Edwardian era!

Now, you may be wondering about tutus - were they as fabulous as the ones we adore today? Well, think about it! We are in the dawn of the 20th century, the golden age of romantic ballet. And yes, there were indeed tutus! Although the designs were a bit more conservative than today's modern and free-flowing designs, they still oozed elegance. Picture a graceful ballerina wearing a tutu, full of delicate layers, usually made of tulle, reaching her knees. Oh, and let's not forget the long-sleeved bodice and the dainty shoes! It was all about grace and finesse, like a whisper of beauty.

A special treat for today's post? This week, we're celebrating a monumental ballet! Did you know that the 9th of July 1912 saw the première of a truly groundbreaking ballet, "La Princesse Malgré Elle" by Jacques Offenbach?! This masterpiece premiered at the Theatre de la Gaîté in Paris, marking a significant moment in the world of ballet. Imagine the buzz! The excitement! People queuing up hours in advance to witness the breathtaking talent and the sheer beauty of the performance.

Oh, and can we talk about the clothes?! It wasn't all just tutus, darling. This was the era of flamboyant and stylish fashion, so we have to do a little outfit planning! If I could magically whisk myself back to 1912 Paris, I would don a fabulous gown, cinched in at the waist and flowing to the floor, topped with a charming hat and a few pearls for good measure. Now, can you imagine arriving at the theatre with your fellow tutu enthusiasts, looking picture perfect and ready for the dazzling spectacle of "La Princesse Malgré Elle?" It's enough to make even the most seasoned fashionista's heart skip a beat.

My mission? To share the love for the tutu. And in this Edwardian era, the beauty and grace of ballet were so celebrated that I wouldn’t even have to persuade my fellow ladies to rock a tutu - it was already part of the elegant and graceful lifestyle. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't spread the joy of pink! Maybe I’d convince the designers to introduce a splash of pink to the palette for a show-stopping tutu, one that would be the talk of the city. Imagine the delight on those lovely ladies' faces when they witness a graceful ballerina dancing in a blush-coloured tutu. Now that's what I call "tutu-licious!"

This week, my lovelies, I urge you - be inspired by the era! Take a trip to your favourite theatre, embrace your inner ballerina, and let your inner elegance shine!
