Hello darlings! Welcome back to your weekly dose of tutus and all things ballet! It’s me, your ever-so-pink-tutu-wearing travel companion, Emma! As you know, every Tuesday, we delve into the wondrous history of the tutu, travelling through time to appreciate the magnificent evolution of this iconic dance garment. And this week, my lovelies, we’re twirling back to the sparkling year of 1913!

Oh, 1913! A time when flapper dresses were all the rage, bobbed hair was the hottest hairstyle, and everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, was crazy for a good tango.

Now, let’s talk about the ballet scene back then! Just imagine the gasps of wonder when the prima ballerina of the Paris Opera took the stage in her glorious, multi-layered tulle tutu! The cascading layers would practically float on air, reflecting the light with every graceful twirl, making it appear as if she was simply an ethereal, celestial being. Such magic!

1913 was also the year the legendary Diaghilev Ballets Russes captivated the world with its innovative ballets. The costumes were truly a sight to behold, my darlings, a delightful mixture of the ancien regime and a dash of moderne extravagance! The tutus, in their short, romantic styles, were a world away from the Romantic Period ballets, yet still managed to remain elegant and captivating. Think shimmering tulle, opulent embellishments, and maybe even a feather or two – just imagine!

Remember that delightful Parisian atmosphere of the 1910s, with the Parisian boulevards buzzing with life, and all the glamorous cafes and restaurants in a tizzy over the latest dance craze. Oh, the romance of it all!

However, let’s not forget the more practical side of 1913! The tutu was a symbol of grace, of freedom, and of art, but also a significant factor in improving the dancers' movements and agility. The lightweight fabric and the layered structure allowed for ease of movement, enabling the ballerinas to perform spectacular jumps and leaps that would amaze audiences for generations. Imagine those magnificent en pointe performances – I'm quite certain the whole world gasped!

I bet that on this very date, June 24th, 1913, someone was dazzling a packed Parisian theatre with their dance! Imagine the magic – the light on the stage, the hush of the audience, the grace of the movement, and then BAM! A perfectly executed fouetté with the dancer’s tulle tutu swirling and sparkling – pure bliss! I feel like grabbing my pink tutu and travelling back in time just to witness such beauty!

But even if we can't go back, my lovelies, let’s enjoy these timeless lessons about the tutu and all its glorious forms. As for me, I’m off to continue my time travelling adventure! Maybe I'll pop back to 1913 just to see who is wearing the most dazzling tutu in all of Paris!

Until next Tuesday, keep your tutus at the ready, and always remember: A life without a pink tutu is a life not lived to the fullest. Now, go out there and let your inner tutu spirit shine!

Yours truly,

Emma xx
