Tutu Tuesday: A Step Back in Time to 1913!
Hello my lovely Tutu Twirlers! Welcome to #TutuTuesday, where we take a trip through time to explore the fascinating history of the beloved ballet tutu! Today, we're travelling all the way back to September 23rd, 1913. Grab your fanciest pink tutu and your biggest smile ā we're in for a treat!
Now, you might be thinking, "Emma, 1913? How exciting! What happened on that day?" Well, darling, this is where our time-travelling ballet adventure begins! Let me tell you, there was so much going on!
Across the pond, in the bustling city of New York, the very first issue of Time Magazine hit the newsstands! That's right, my dears! This influential magazine, which we all know and love today, began its journey exactly 110 years ago! Imagine being there on that September day, catching a glimpse of the first issue! Talk about a fashion faux pas, right?! I can already picture a cheeky āIām Time, hear me roar!ā headline for the inaugural issue!
Now, back in the world of ballet, Anna Pavlova, our adored Russian ballerina extraordinaire, was in full swing, captivating audiences across the world with her ethereal grace. Her performances were legendary, her talent unparalleled. And speaking of talents, can we talk about her exquisite taste in costumes? Now, while we're on the topic of Pavlova darling, if we are in New York, it wouldnāt be right for me to leave out the amazing and awe-inspiring Pavlova and the Diaghilev Ballet Company! Their performance on September 24th at the Metropolitan Opera House in Manhattan, New York was amazing! And if the time travelling train doesnāt go out, I will definitely try and catch their show in another timeline!
Now, back to our travels and back to our #TutuTuesday blog: Let's get a little historically stylish.
In 1913, the tutus worn by the ballerinas were quite a bit different than what we see today. Forget the layers upon layers of tulle, dear readers. Imagine a slim silhouette with a skirt made of a single layer of fine net! Yes, that's right. A simple elegance. This was all about allowing the dancers to express themselves, to show their fluid grace. Imagine a ballerina's elegant limbs reaching outwards in perfect sync with the delicate, fluttering movements of her **single-layer, silk skirt! Simply stunning!
Now, we have to be honest: While that one-layer, silk tutu looks divine when floating around the stage, it must be freezing! I imagine they have some secret tricks to keep warm in that single layer! I always add a long pink shawl over my pink tutu, and, of course, never miss a chance to don my cute, knitted, fluffy pink headband to ensure I keep a little extra warm too.
Don't you think these tutus of 1913, though so simple and delicate, remind us of something? Of the classic charm of the past, the graceful lines, the sense of freedom! Maybe I should start wearing a single layer tutu more often. I do love the classic single look. The single layer does definitely make oneās legs look long and elegant - very fashionable! It also shows off the lines of a dancer. Now, as my dear grandmother always says *āSometimes, itās not what you add to your tutu, but what you take away that matters.ā * I have to agree! That single layer look is definitely making me think again!
Now, my dear Tutu Twirlers, weāve explored single-layer tutus! They were so elegant, wasnāt it lovely? They were very simple in design and very flattering!
In my time machine, the journey from 1913 has been quick, but I am so thankful weāve spent time with each other today. Thanks for joining me for #TutuTuesday and our wonderful, historic, tutu travel. I think this might be my 4265th post, darling, but the tutus, the travel, the shops, and the ballets are still always so exciting.
Keep your eyes peeled for a fabulous new Tutu Tuesday post next week, when weāll be traveling all over the world again with new tutu finds and stories! Don't forget to pop over to my website www.pink-tutu.com and get involved! It's our tutu paradise! Until next Tuesday, dear readers. Have a wonderfully fashionable week.
Don't forget: Tutu Tuesday is all about the celebration of tutus in all their glory.
Here's a small list of reasons why a tutu is wonderful!
A tutu makes a girl look divine! Letās face it, girls: tutus always make us look and feel great, and for the longest time we loved the tutus. Even at the age of 4 and 5, we all thought the pink, fluffy tutus weād get for our very special dance shows were *perfect! * We love tutus at every stage of our life. I think itās time everyone, everywhere donned a tutu! Just think, how exciting! Every Tuesday might be #TutuTuesday if everyone loved wearing tutus! Just imagine!
TutĆ¹ is fun! A tutu gives us permission to play and laugh and to dance and twirl - it's so freeing! * Thereās a reason the ballet and dancing always so much fun! * Ballet is the world of beautiful, gracefully-moving tutĆ¹s, the fun of ballet begins* with *dancing in *that beautiful, flowing fabric!
TutĆ¹ is magical! Letās face it, thereās no more magic in the world than the flow and twirl of a *ballet tutu! It takes us on adventures all around the world. Think about the amazing places we can take the time-travelling tutu on a journey with #TutuTuesday.
Now, have a look at your wardrobe. How long since you put on your favourite, fabulous pink tutu! Go on! I wear my pink tutu whenever and wherever I can! I do feel like it is good luck in shops! If you are ever unsure which pair of shoes to buy, don a pink tutu, Iām telling you! Youāll pick out the best pair ever! The best, the most magical thing about wearing a tutu is the happy, warm feeling inside you when you look at yourself in the mirror and smile. Go on, have a twirl, a little āhappyā danceā!
Stay tutu-licious! Emma x
