#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: February 10th, 1914 - Post #4285
Hello lovelies! Welcome back to my Pink-Tutu blog! Itās Tuesday and you know what that meansā¦ Itās time to get our tutus twirling! Today, Iāve hopped on the time machine and landed in Paris. The air smells of pastries, fresh lavender, andā¦ something divine that I canāt quite put my finger on, but Iām guessing itās the scent of artistic inspiration!
So, gather āround and grab a glass of champagne, darling! Today, weāre exploring the captivating world of ballet tutus in the year 1914! And letās be honest, we all love a bit of historical context with our tutus, right?
The Rise of the Romantic Tutu
Imagine Paris in the 1910s, the golden age of fashion and creativity. Think Edwardian-era silhouettes, with an infusion of feminine frills and elaborate hats, a sprinkle of Art Nouveau motifs, and an undeniable dash of Parisian flair! This is where the tutu story starts to take a magical turn.
In 1914, the Romantic tutu, all fluffy and feminine, was starting to win the hearts of the balletic world! This elegant creation was the complete opposite of the heavy and stiff tutus worn previously, the tutus with the stiff, rigid and very full skirts.
The Romantic tutu allowed ballerinas the freedom to move gracefully, showcasing their every elegant twirl and graceful arabesque. The skirt itself was lighter and shorter, made of layers of delicate tulle, floating in the air like gossamer clouds. And just imagine those elegant layers of soft tulle, swirling and dancing around the ballerinasā perfectly sculpted limbs.
The Magic of Balletās Most Iconic Creation: A Little Historical Perspective.
The history of the tutu is quite fascinating really! Tutus, as we know them, began their journey in the late 18th century with ballerinas embracing tighter knee length skirts, that showcased the athleticism and elegance of ballet. But what we consider the āclassic tutuā, was born much later in 1832!
Think āLa Sylphide,ā a magical ballet that had everyone in Paris talking! Marie Taglioniās tutu took the world by storm! It was lightweight, soft, almost ethereal! That revolutionary style with the layers and layers of tulle opened up a whole new world of possibilities for the ballet dancers of the day, and for ballerinas since.
It was the ānew waveā of the ballet world! A beautiful rebellion! Ballet was about expressing itself freely. And the Romantic tutu with its lightweight airy texture did just that!
*But letās talk coloursā¦ The pink power of the tutu! *
While I love the grace of a traditional white tutu, pink is always going to be my first love, isn't it? Pink has a sweet femininity that's almost magical. In the world of ballet and performance, pink makes a real statement.
Imagine the enchanting scenes I've witnessed on my time travelling adventures ā from Parisian Opera performances, to those magnificent Royal Ballet shows. A ballerina twirling in a delicate pink tutu - that image has captured the essence of my whole blog here at pink-tutu.com - a dream come true!
*1914: The Beginning of a Beautiful Story *
The Romantic tutu of the 1910s - like a whisper of poetry set to music. It redefined the very nature of the dancerās performance - making it a graceful and fluid expression of the music! The story of the tutu is not a single-stop event!
And remember darlings, tutus arenāt just for the stage! They are our wearable fantasy! I hope Iāve inspired you to consider wearing a pink tutu, or perhaps a different colour? The possibilities are limitless, And my biggest aim is for the pink tutu to be more than just a part of the ballet world. It is time to bring back that fabulous era of feminine glamour to everyday fashion!
On February 10th, 1914
And so, on this specific February 10th, 1914, I imagined myself being whisked into the heart of the French ballet world. Iām not sure exactly what kind of shows are being put on but just being there - surrounded by that passion for performance and dancing - thatās where I find my own sense of style and design inspiration.
Perhaps there was a magical fairy tale like āLa Sylphideā performance taking place on stage, and those ballet dancers twirling in their elegant Romantic tutus. And me dressed in my best pink tulle and watching it all unfold.
*A Time Travel Tip from Emma *
