#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1914-02-24
Welcome back to Pink Tutu, my little darlings! This is Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu enthusiast, ready to whisk you away on another historical journey. Today's Tutu Tuesday is extra special, not just because I've got my absolute favourite, billowing pink tutu on, but because we're exploring the glorious world of ballet back in 1914!
Hold onto your tiaras, because this trip back in time is a whirlwind of glamour and grace, darling. The year is 1914, the scent of Chanel No.5 hangs in the air, and the waltz is the most fashionable dance of the day. Think glittering chandeliers, shimmering gowns, and ladies with beautiful updos – it's a sight for sore eyes!
A Tutu's Journey Through Time: The Early 1900s
Now, 1914 was a bit of a transitionary phase for the tutu. We're still feeling the romantic vibes from the 1800s, where romantic, layered tutus were all the rage – think wispy tulle, lots of ruffles, and delicate details.
It's in this era we see the emergence of something truly spectacular - the classical tutu, darling! Remember those lovely, knee-length, soft, tutus that float with such graceful elegance, the ones that really highlight the lines and movement of the ballerina? Well, those beauties were starting to come into their own. These tutus are so versatile; imagine twirling under a grand chandelier in a Parisian opera house in this type of tutu! Now that is what I call pure theatre, darlings!
February 24th, 1914: A Night at the Ballet
Fast forward to February 24th, 1914, a Tuesday, much like today. (Isn’t it amazing how history repeats itself?!) On this day, audiences in the United States would have had the chance to catch the The Fairy Doll at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. This fantastical ballet with music by Ivanovici, starring the iconic Anna Pavlova, would have been a spectacle to behold, filled with intricate footwork and beautiful costumes. Now, I'm just imagining a glorious pink tutu in the heart of all that magic... oh, it's enough to send shivers down my spine!
Fashion Frenzy: Ballet and the Modern Woman
What's most interesting about the ballet scene back in 1914 is its link to the ever-evolving world of fashion. You see, darling, as women were breaking free from traditional corseted garments, so too was the ballet world starting to shed the more restrictive costumes of the past. Think loose, flowing dresses and more fitted attire that allowed for freedom of movement - exactly what we need for dancing and looking effortlessly chic.
The 1910s and 1920s were particularly interesting, with short skirts, dropped waistlines, and looser fits taking the lead, influenced by the liberating fashion of the flappers. And you know what, my darlings? These shifts in fashion mirror changes in the way dancers move and express themselves. We can see how this change in dance costume directly affects the dance.
I simply cannot imagine having to pirouette in a floor length velvet dress with multiple layers of petticoats! What is there to pirouette with? I suppose it wouldn't look too dissimilar to a waltz, but if we all agree on one thing, it's that there is absolutely no way a tutu would have any place in such an impractical piece of attire. (Though some of my favourite dance looks come with the iconic floor-length tutus and swishing trains, I can certainly see the attraction. It really brings the dramatic ballet performance to life!)
