#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History: 1914-06-30

Dearest Tutu-Lovers,

It's #TutuTuesday once again, and oh, how exciting this week's date is! 30th June 1914, a time when the world was on the brink of something enormous - but for us tutu enthusiasts, this date marks a moment in history when a true icon of ballet costume was being born!

Remember those adorable fluffy tutus worn by the Little Swans in "Swan Lake?" The ones that swirl so perfectly as they dance? They just wouldn't be the same without the revolutionary, iconic design of * The Romantic Tutu *!

Today, as I sip my strawberry tea in a Parisian cafe, I'm surrounded by the glamour and magic that * this incredible garment brought to ballet. We've traveled back in time to the dawn of a new era of femininity and grace - all thanks to a brilliant dancer and a little bit of * revolutionary fabric innovation!

Before we step back to the glamorous era of the Romantic Tutu, I've got to say that I just adored exploring the vintage stores this morning! You can still find some incredible silk fabrics, beautiful vintage buttons and delicate laces - the perfect finds to create your own romantic-era look! If you want a real #TutuTuesday treat, I have to tell you about this charming shop just off the Champs-Elysees called "Au Bonheur des Dames." *The shelves are bursting with the most *dazzling silks and lace trimmings - everything a budding fashionista (or a dedicated tutu maker) could ever dream of! It was truly an explosion of colours and textures. I couldn't leave without a new spool of shimmering rose-pink ribbon - I think a tiny bit of pink is absolutely perfect for the vintage tutu look. And we all know the best tutus are pink!

But now, let's journey back to the world of the Romantic Tutu!

In the early 1900s, the traditional ballet costume was stiff and constricting. Dancers wore thick layers of fabric and boned corsets - it wasn't really about free movement or graceful artistry, just about holding a pose for as long as possible. But dancers like Anna Pavlova, a beautiful, gifted and determined ballerina from Saint Petersburg, knew that things needed to change. She wanted a softer, more flowing silhouette, one that emphasized the fluidity and power of her movement.

Enter the innovative world of tulle! Around 1914, Pavlova was touring the world with her company and discovered the possibilities of a new kind of soft, flexible tulle which could be woven to be light, strong, and beautifully transparent. The invention of this lightweight, breathable material, was revolutionary and changed the whole game for costume design. Gone were the layers and constricting corsets! It was a breath of fresh air - literally! The dancers, unrestricted by their costumes, could move like birds. And so, The Romantic Tutu was born, thanks to Pavlova's vision and the genius of innovative textiles!

These airy and elegant tutus, created with multiple layers of delicate tulle, crafted with precision, gave the dancers a new level of mobility. Imagine being able to spin, jump, and leap without worrying about bulky, restricting fabric. Imagine creating swirling, magical images on stage with a fluttering cloud of silk around you - that's the magic of the Romantic Tutu!

I just love how the Romantic Tutu, like the lightest brushstroke of a dancer's art, evokes the idea of flight and elegance. These tutus embody a lightness of being, a sense of graceful elegance and delicate artistry that we can all strive to embody. They also allow us to celebrate the beauty of a dancer's form through its transparent, floating construction.

Let's celebrate the revolutionary invention that allowed The Romantic Tutu to be born! To Pavlova's brilliant vision and the magic of this exquisite tulle, we owe a debt of gratitude! You're seeing the magic of this special tulle everywhere - from ballerinas in Paris, New York and London, to whimsical **DIY projects for the Tutu enthusiast (thatโ€™s me!), the Romantic Tutu continues to grace us all.

I am dreaming of creating a perfect Romantic Tutu in shimmering pink tulle, perhaps for the Swan Lake premiere in Vienna on July 31st. I can't wait! This trip is just getting started! The ballet shows have been absolutely incredible. But enough about the beautiful shows for now... It's time to explore another vintage fabric store in search of lace! Until next week's #TutuTuesday, may your tutus be light and airy, your hearts filled with grace, and your dreams be as whimsical as a dancer's whirl!

Much love, and many twirls, Emma www.pink-tutu.com
