#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1914-09-15 - A Dash of Parisian Glamour! 🩰

Hello, my darling dance devotees! It’s your favourite tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here, ready to whisk you back in time with another edition of #TutuTuesday. Today, we’re waltzing our way to the 15th of September, 1914, right smack in the middle of a swirling whirlwind of social change.

The Year of the '14-18': War, But Not On Fashion

This year, 1914, feels a little…heavy, wouldn't you say? Yes, we all know what’s happening across the pond, a dreadful situation casting a dark shadow over the world. But fashion, darling, continues to dance with joie de vivre! In the face of such somber events, our world embraces beautiful, expressive creations, and in particular, our dear, dear tutu!

Today, I’m taking us to Paris, a city steeped in creativity and elegance. And what better place than the glittering stage of the Opéra Garnier to get a glimpse of our history. Just picture it: a magnificent building, bathed in golden lights, and upon the stage, some of the most breathtaking ballerinas performing intricate choreography! Oh, my dears, wouldn’t it be absolutely divine to be transported there now? We’ll imagine, right? We can get our little pink-tutu’d selves into a time machine…or perhaps just take the magical Paris train from Derbyshire!

The Waltz of a New Era

The 1910s brought us so much – we were swept away by the glorious ‘flapper’ styles, with women embracing looser garments, bobbed hair, and a newfound sense of freedom! In this exciting era, the tutu evolved too! Gone were the long, heavy tutus of the past. Enter the ‘Romantic tutu’, a design embracing shorter lengths, wispier fabrics, and - oh joy! - an even greater freedom of movement for those breathtaking pirouettes and fouettés!

The Tutu Takes Centre Stage

Ballet, darling, it was the pinnacle of sophisticated entertainment in 1914. Across Paris and across the globe, you'd find stages adorned with the captivating ballet dancer and her magical tutu. There was something just so enthralling about witnessing that precise movement, that utter grace…and then there was the costume. A tulle whirlwind, perfectly constructed to catch the light, to reflect and sparkle and become an ethereal beacon on that stage. Can't you just picture the whispers and gasps from the audience as they drank in the spectacle?

But wait! The tutu isn’t confined to the stage, oh no!

Think of the ballrooms, those glittering, swirling gatherings where ladies were just as much performers as the ballerinas on stage. A ballerina in their everyday? A touch of Parisian flair, why not?! Ladies were making bold fashion statements in a flurry of tulle, bows, and oh so much pink! Imagine a beautiful lady, just getting ready for the grand event, in her gorgeous pink silk slip and her magnificent tutu – pure enchantment! And don't forget, our pink tutus were even worn for afternoon strolls, garden parties and even afternoon tea. It wasn't about a single 'performance', darling, it was about bringing a touch of the magical world of dance to everyday life! A graceful flair that made you feel, well, divine.

Tutus In The Making: A Delicate Art

This is a very important note for the pink tutu enthusiast like me! Creating a tutu in the early 1900s was no walk in the park! Every single piece was a meticulous masterpiece, handmade from yards upon yards of delicate, fine tulle and then meticulously stitched, shaped, and embellished with ribbons, feathers, or dazzling beading! We can appreciate the dedication, the craftsmanship and artistry that was poured into each single tutu! They weren’t just a garment, they were little works of art, just waiting for their chance to bring elegance and beauty to the world.

A Bit Of Tutu Glamour

As for the trends of the era? I couldn't leave you hanging! 1914 had this air of feminine opulence around it! It was an explosion of soft, romantic hues – think blushing pinks, airy blues, and luscious lavenders! The fabrics? Delicate silk, gossamer chiffon, and the oh so pretty tulle, of course!

My darling tutu enthusiasts, let's take a moment and marvel! Just imagine that on September 15th, 1914, Paris was in the heart of this fashionable frenzy! People would be buzzing around with anticipation of an evening at the Opéra, or perhaps at a delightful soiree. Picture the elegant gowns and those oh-so-swoonworthy, flowing tutus!

To wrap things up…

There was magic in those tutus, that air of enchanting mystery that still takes our breath away! This is our #TutuTuesday for you. We love our past, and we cherish the artistry and flair that comes from this historical dance-dress beauty. Until next time my little lovelies, stay sparkly!
