#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History - 4348 - A Trip to 1915: The Dawn of the Modern Tutu!

Greetings, darlings! It’s your favourite pink-loving, tutu-obsessed ballerina blogger, Emma, back with another whirlwind adventure through the wonderful world of dancewear history! This week, we’re stepping back in time to April 27th, 1915, a date that, believe it or not, marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of the iconic tutu. Buckle your ballet shoes, my dears, we’re heading for the era of the Modern Tutu!

As a true tutu enthusiast, I can’t resist a good time-hopping escapade. I’m always drawn to moments in history when the fashion scene transformed. 1915 is such a fascinating era – it was a time when the world was embracing a new modernity, and dance was right at the heart of it. Now, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely adore the romantic and flowing tutus of the 19th century. They’re ethereal and captivating. But 1915 saw a change, a revolution in the tutu, that really made the dancers stand out!

This week, I found myself amidst the bustling streets of Paris. Now, Paris has always been a hub of fashion, and back in 1915, the City of Lights was awash in dazzling styles that embraced bold shapes, geometric patterns, and an incredible attention to detail. Even the ballet scene was reflecting this modern spirit. You see, my dear readers, 1915 marked the rise of the modern tutu, a design that brought forth a new era of movement and athleticism.

Gone were the heavy, layered skirts of yore. The modern tutu was born of a revolution – a demand for practicality and graceful expression! Imagine flowing, graceful movements with more freedom for leaps and pirouettes. The new shorter tutus gave the dancers greater range of motion and allowed the public to truly admire their incredible strength and artistry. I'm talking short, structured skirts made of several layers of stiff tulle that created an amazing silhouette. You see, with shorter, tighter skirts, the dancers had the power to make even the smallest movement expressive, creating truly mesmerising performances.

Now, who exactly are we indebted to for this wonderful shift? It's impossible to credit just one name, dear readers. It was a collective effort by various choreographers, costume designers and ballet masters who, at that time, saw a new way forward for ballet. Vaslav Nijinsky, one of the most influential dancers and choreographers of the early 20th century, helped popularize this new silhouette in his revolutionary ballets. With his modern style, he broke with tradition, pushing the boundaries of expression, both in choreography and costume.

I took a delightful journey to the Paris Opera Ballet to witness these stunning new tutus. Let me tell you, darling readers, it was a truly magical experience! I found myself amidst a breathtaking sea of colour and movement. It was simply intoxicating! Seeing these sleek new designs in the most vibrant colours – like the softest shade of lavender or a vivid scarlet – simply took my breath away.

There I was, witnessing the most breathtaking rendition of "L’Après-midi d'un Faune", a revolutionary piece that captivated Paris. It was an absolute whirlwind of captivating movements, breathtaking scenery, and costumes that spoke to a whole new way of moving, a dance that spoke to modernity and beauty. I was spellbound. This is how the modern tutu captured the world’s attention - not only for its style but also for the stories it was meant to tell!

Of course, after the ballet performance, my adventure continued! What better way to celebrate such an iconic piece of dancewear history than by gracing myself in my favourite, most gorgeous pink tulle tutu! (You just have to, darling. It’s the unwritten law!)

Oh, and speaking of history in the making, did you know that today is also the 7th anniversary of the first time women in the UK voted in a general election? Now, I'm not a history buff or anything, but for a fashion and dance enthusiast, I must admit it’s incredibly empowering to be celebrating this significant milestone, seeing how far we’ve come!

So, dear readers, the next time you see a beautiful ballerina gliding across the stage in a modern tutu, remember, it's not just about a costume, but about a piece of dance history! It is an iconic emblem of revolution in movement and expression.
