#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: A Trip to 1915! 🩰💖

Hello darlings, and welcome back to another glorious #TutuTuesday! It's your girl Emma, here, reporting live from… well, that’s a secret for now, because this week, my darling readers, I’m venturing back in time! That’s right, my Tutu Time Machine has whirred and clicked its way to July 6th, 1915 – a date buzzing with theatrical excitement!

Before I reveal my destination, a quick reminder – if you’re new here, you can catch up on all things pink tutu goodness on www.pink-tutu.com. This week’s post, number 4358 in our Ballet Tutu History chronicles, will be focusing on the grand fashion statements of yesteryear, the whispers of future trends, and a peek into the enchanting world of 1915 ballet.

And let’s just say, you're not going to want to miss this trip down memory lane, because it’s a story of colour, style, and a love affair with the stage.

Now, onto my adventures! You know how much I love exploring new places. To be frank, I simply adore travelling by train - especially in first class, you can really indulge in some beautiful vintage styles! Luckily, a few exciting performances and some rather good show-stopping turns have netted me enough cash for a first-class ticket – so this week, the destination is… Paris! Can you imagine? The Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, the gorgeous dresses – sigh, just divine!

Paris has always been a haven for the avant-garde, especially when it comes to fashion and performance. The Parisians simply love their artistic flourishes! And speaking of flourishes… have you seen the tutus? They're just as beautiful and intricate as one would expect!

So, where did I get all these fab details? You guessed it - the beautiful Opéra Garnier! What an iconic place! My heart was racing the moment I stepped inside the glorious Palais Garnier, an absolute marvel of architecture. It’s like a palace made for dreaming! The Opéra is famous, of course, for being a cornerstone of Parisian ballet, and today, it’s hosting a particularly dazzling performance - the legendary Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova is in town! Gasp!

It turns out that Pavlova, she’s totally a fashion icon in her own right – you know, like our Audrey Hepburns, but circa 1915! Rumour has it, she wears an astonishing white satin costume, designed by none other than Christian Lacroix! Yes, darling, that Christian Lacroix – you know, a genius when it comes to ballet costuming – an absolute titan of design!

Of course, one cannot simply gaze at an amazing tutu without indulging in a spot of shopping – and oh, honey, what shopping it was! I simply had to take in the Parisian style, so I visited a couple of amazing department stores – a place called Printemps and a delightful shop called Bon Marché . Honestly, it’s the stuff of dreams! They have all the latest styles – lace, feathers, silk… even these amazing new dresses called flappers! You won’t believe these skirts, so gloriously short! We simply must find some ways to get these to England! I envision my London Ballet Studio brimming with pink flapper dresses – now wouldn’t that be fabulous!

While on the subject of trends, I must tell you about another fashionable darling: Gabrielle Chanel ! This woman, a Parisian queen of style, was making huge waves with her bold and liberated approach to fashion.

Forget stiff corsets and fussy layers! Chanel brought in simplicity, practicality – and of course, a certain effortless elegance – the true key to a stylish Parisian look. And honestly? I’m feeling totally inspired by it all! Maybe, just maybe, the ballet world could use some more of that effortless, flowing Parisian energy...

One thing is for certain – the Parisian women were the ultimate trendsetters, paving the way for all the wonderful things we get to enjoy in our ballet outfits today – the simple and chic looks, the stunning styles… and let’s not forget the tutus. My gosh, tutus have been around for ages – even in the early 1900s! It’s amazing how things go full circle!

Now, I must wrap up this amazing blog post, but trust me, you'll be hearing much more about my Paris trip – it’s absolutely packed with more Parisian fashion highlights and exciting dance discoveries!

But first, my dearest tutu lovers – you simply must go and take a trip to your local theatre! The theatre is simply the most beautiful place in the world - all those magical stories, the grand gestures, and the amazing music… simply enchanting. You can try ballet, maybe, or something even more spectacular.

Whatever you do, do it with the same flair and gusto that fills the world of the dance – after all, isn’t every day an opportunity to feel like a prima ballerina?

Till next time, stay fabulous!

And always remember to embrace the pink tutu life!💖
