Tutu Tuesday #4424: A Blast from the Past! (10th October 1916)
Greetings, fellow tutu enthusiasts! It's Emma here, your pink tutu-clad time traveller, and I'm thrilled to be back with another delightful journey into the world of ballet tutus. Today, we're hopping on the trusty time train and heading to the captivating year of 1916.
I have to tell you, stepping into the past is always such an adventure! Today I'm standing on the vibrant streets of London, feeling a distinct autumn chill in the air, with the smell of freshly-baked bread wafting from the nearby bakeries. Ah, what a wonderful aroma!
The most captivating thing, however, is the style! Oh my, 1916 fashion is a whirlwind of exquisite details and dramatic silhouettes. The ladies are sporting gowns with elegant flowing lines, and oh-so-stylish hats adorned with plumes and ribbons. It's a true spectacle, especially when you add in the dazzling outfits worn at the grand opera and ballet performances!
Now, you're all wondering, "Emma, what's the tutu scene like in 1916?" Well, hold onto your tiaras, darlings, because things are about to get quite interesting! This is the period when tutus are taking a glorious leap forward! It's no longer just about the traditional white romantic tutu. Now, there's an abundance of creativity with fabrics and colours, pushing the boundaries of tutu design. It's a magical era for the tutu!
And what a perfect day to discuss it, because the 10th of October, 1916 was a most memorable one. Why, it was the day that Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, the renowned Russian ballet company, opened its season at the London Coliseum. The air crackled with anticipation, and London society flocked to see the wonders of Russian dance! It was said that there wasn't a single empty seat in the house.
And speaking of spectacular, I absolutely had to experience a ballet show while here! This evening, I witnessed the breathtaking beauty of "The Firebird," a stunning work with opulent costumes and dazzling sets. It featured a truly captivating ballerina named Tamara Karsavina. She brought a fiery passion to her role that left me completely mesmerized.
This evening was a grand reminder of why ballet is so powerful, itโs a language of emotions, a kaleidoscope of colours and movement, and, of course, a place where the most incredible tutus grace the stage! I can't tell you enough how thrilled I am that I get to experience it in this exciting period. I have to confess, I even went a little bit wild at Harrods on my visit, and have already added a few treasures to my tutu collection - a soft, silk tulle confection with sparkling embellishments - divine - and a lovely pair of dancing slippers made from the most supple leather. What a wonderful day it's been!
Before we go, I'd love to know what you're most excited about regarding tutus this week! Tell me about your ballet classes, performances you're attending, and even those gorgeous new additions to your tutu collection! I always adore hearing about your sartorial adventures, so feel free to spill the tea in the comments section. I can't wait to hear all about it!
Now, until next Tuesday, remember to twirl with joy and embrace the delightful world of tutus! And remember, every day is an opportunity to wear a pink tutu. Because, after all, the world looks so much prettier with a sprinkle of pink tulle.
*With love and twirls, *
Emma
