Tutu Tuesday: A Little History Lesson – #4452

Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast and all-around lover of all things twirly and delightful. It’s #TutuTuesday again, and today I’m taking a little trip back in time! As always, my trusty time-traveling tutu and my adorable vintage suitcase are packed with my favourite ballet accessories. This week, we’re heading back to a fascinating moment in ballet history: April 24th, 1917.

Can you believe it’s been nearly 100 years since we last celebrated this day? Well, don’t worry, I've got all the exciting details. Now, before we take off, let’s chat about what made ballet in 1917 so unique! Imagine London, my favourite city for finding the perfect silk for a tutu! It’s bustling with life, the air is filled with the music of horsedrawn carriages, and people are dressed in their finest clothing – even the gentlemen sporting splendid top hats! Ballet was just as extravagant, a truly dazzling display of artistry.

Today, you wouldn’t be able to tell a ballet from a modern dance, but back then, the art form was more formal. You see, dancers were performing the classic, story-based ballets like Swan Lake, Giselle and The Sleeping Beauty. I absolutely love these stories – so full of enchantment and grace! You could even find Russian and Italian dancers who travelled to London just to perform.

As for fashion in 1917 – oh my! The women are embracing an ethereal, feminine look. I can just picture them fluttering around in shimmering silk dresses, with flowing gowns and dramatic headdresses. They might be the perfect outfit for my next London soirée, but don't you dare forget the quintessential ballet shoes! These weren’t the pointy pointe shoes we wear today.

Picture instead the sable - a delicate satin slipper with a slight heel. Now, if I'm not careful, I might start swooning just thinking about the intricate detail of those exquisite little shoes. Don't you just love how everything about that era was just so graceful? Just as our dancers move with such elegance!

Back to the grand performance! The dance itself was an elaborate production, featuring incredibly talented dancers dressed in elaborate tutus and captivating the audience with every turn and pirouette. Now, just picture it - the music starts, and the beautiful melodies echo through the elegant theatre. As the ballerinas gracefully glide across the stage in their beautiful tutus, it feels like pure magic, just as you’d imagine.

You wouldn’t find me watching in the audience though, dear readers! You see, I made a grand entrance and went to watch from the wings. It’s quite fun being backstage at a ballet, seeing all the excitement and meeting the dancers! Of course, I couldn’t resist getting dressed up in a dazzling pink tutu and sparkling diamante shoes. I even got to chat with one of the ballerinas about her costume – it was adorned with stunning, shimmering fabric that reminded me of the moonlit water in Swan Lake. I might even add that same texture to my next design. It was the most wonderful trip, a lovely experience!

Let's head back to the present day and our home at www.pink-tutu.com! I'll be busy making a post to share a selection of gorgeous pink tutus. I'll even share some design inspiration from that incredible trip in 1917. Who knows, you might even find yourself creating the next pink tutu trend!

That’s all for this week, darlings. Until next #TutuTuesday, may all your steps be graceful and filled with twirls and elegance! Don't forget to follow me on all social media. See you soon!
