#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1917-07-03

Hello darling darlings! It's Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu aficionado, and today marks another exciting journey through the fascinating world of ballet tutus! You're all on board the Pink Tutu Express, heading to…well, this time we're right here in the heart of London! As a fellow tutu enthusiast, I’m sure you’ll agree, the excitement for tutus was really heating up here in 1917! And if we're talking tutus, we have to start with…the tutu! You guessed it: the Romantic tutu.

I’m sitting here in the chic tea room at Fortnum & Mason on Piccadilly, sipping a lovely pot of Darjeeling (so much better than a spot of Earl Grey!). Today's the 3rd July 1917, which just happens to be the very date that a fabulous performance of La Bayadère took place at the Royal Opera House. Can you imagine, darling? A dazzling display of colourful tutus whirling and twirling on stage! My word, it must have been breathtaking!

#TutuTuesday: What was so Romantic?

Okay, so this romantic era for the tutu… It wasn't quite the fluffy pink dream that we know today, darling! Picture a tutu that flowed down, sweeping the ground – think more ballet princess than dancing sugarplum fairy! The big skirt of these tutus, all billowing and draped, gave the ballerinas a certain majestic, ethereal presence, much like those graceful swans. Oh, how they twirled, a flurry of white fabric…simply divine!

A Little Peek Behind the Tutu:

And talking of swans, these Romantics tutus were quite the fashion statement, let me tell you. Crafted from many layers of gauze or silk – oh, imagine the sheer perfection!- and delicately decorated with lace or velvet trimmings. It took hours upon hours of painstaking handwork to achieve that flawless look – a true testament to the artistry of the time! And then there were the colour choices: Think soft creams, delicate blues, or pale greens…pure loveliness!

Time for Tea and a Ballet Show, Darlings!

Well, my darlings, my day is going to get even more fantastic. In just a few hours I will be stepping into a rather exquisite ballet performance – the "Giselle," at Covent Garden. And I have to say, I’m utterly charmed by the way those tutus still create a breathtaking and dramatic look to the stage. If you ever have the chance, don't miss it! I can already feel the tutu magic radiating around the entire theatre. I can’t wait for all the sparkles and the wonder that awaits!

What We Know Now...

The Romanticist era laid the foundation for everything we know about tutus! Now we have that incredible array of designs – the classic Romantic tutu, the short, whimsical tutu you see in productions like The Nutcracker, and even the sparkly, contemporary tutus that have changed the ballet world! But even with all of those changes, something remains constant; the magical feeling that sweeps over the entire world as that tutu makes its graceful entrance onto the stage! It's about feeling light, free, and utterly empowered!

Now, wouldn't it be splendid if we could bring a little of that ballet tutu spirit into our own everyday lives? Imagine a world where everyone felt this way! We can! The beauty of a tutu doesn't just lie in the graceful dance moves – it’s in the freedom, the confidence, the unwavering sparkle. So put on your tutu (or maybe a tutu inspired outfit), darling! We can create our own personal tutu magic in every moment. Until next week, darlings, stay sparkly and never be afraid to express yourself!

Yours always,

Emma, the Pink Tutu Queen www.pink-tutu.com
