#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through 1917! 🩰
Hello, darlings! Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, back again with another dazzling dive into the history of our beloved ballet wear! It's #TutuTuesday, which means we're travelling through time to discover the glorious evolution of the tutu.
This week, we're heading to a time when the world was embroiled in a rather large conflict, but the stage was still alight with beauty and grace. Yes, we're venturing into the year 1917, a pivotal year in both history and the development of the ballet tutu!
As you know, my dearest readers, my passion lies in making the world a more tutu-ful place, and I think there's no better time than right now, to delve into a little fashion history, don't you?
Step Aside, Whiskers, It's Time For Tutus!
Now, while 1917 was a rather unsettling year globally, the dance world was buzzing! It was a period when new forms of dance, like modern ballet, were starting to gain ground. The traditional, Romantic tutu, with its billowing tiers of tulle, was beginning to shift. A more streamlined, athletic look, designed for dancers to move with greater fluidity, was gaining popularity. Imagine it: sleek lines, graceful movement, and a sprinkle of revolutionary innovation - what a time to be alive!
From Trains To… Even More Trains!
Speaking of alive, you wouldn't believe the adventures I had this time. I traveled by train (always my favorite!), and let me tell you, a pink tutu in a bustling train station definitely caused quite the stir! It's fascinating how some things, like the beauty of a pink tutu, never fade in popularity.
A Day In History: The 9th of October
And guess what?! On October 9th, 1917, there was a big ballet performance happening! While I can't give you specific details on the production (I'd hate to spoil any historical secrets!), I can say that the tutu, both in its traditional and new forms, would have played a crucial role in making it a magical experience.
Shopping & Sights!
As for my own travels in 1917, oh my dear, I found myself exploring London, which was absolutely bursting with life, especially when it came to fashion! Now, back in the early 20th century, it was considered quite scandalous to wear anything so short as a tutu, let alone one that was pink! But as you all know, darling readers, I am a strong proponent of breaking fashion rules and celebrating the beautiful colours and style that brings us joy!
And you know me, a trip wouldn’t be complete without some exquisite shopping. I purchased a divine little hat, adorned with feathers and an absolutely stunning pair of gloves, just the right shade to accentuate my pink tutu, naturally! Oh, to have seen all those stylish people dressed in their beautiful outfits! There were such elaborate outfits for theatre performances back then, and it's wonderful how history is cyclical with fashion trends repeating themselves - in my opinion, this makes buying vintage clothes such fun!
Our Next Tutu Tuesday: Stay Tuned!
As I journey back to the 21st century, I find myself utterly fascinated by the history of ballet. This week, the evolution of the tutu continued with the move towards streamlined designs that embraced athleticism, showing us how fashion and dance evolve in tandem! I cannot wait to share more fascinating facts with you all next Tuesday! Until then, may your days be full of twirls and pink-tutu inspired moments!
Yours always,
Emma 💕
