#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post 4480 – 6th November 1917: A Dance in the Dappled Light!
Hello darlings, and welcome back to another fabulous #TutuTuesday! I’m Emma, your time-travelling tutu enthusiast, and I’m so thrilled to whisk you back to the era of lavish ballrooms and captivating performances, right here on www.pink-tutu.com. This week, we’re waltzing our way to November 6th, 1917 – a date overflowing with dance and glamour.
As the gentle, autumnal light filters through the leaves, I find myself in London, England. I adore the British capital, the air hums with excitement for a plethora of stage performances and it is simply brimming with history. The grandeur of Covent Garden Opera House beckons, a beacon of artistry. Just imagine: ladies draped in velvet and lace, men with top hats and canes, all taking in a performance, their gazes drawn to the captivating spectacle on the stage! I’ve taken a grand stroll through Harrods today – what a delight for the eyes and the heart!
So, what is happening on this magical day in dance history? Oh, it's a wonderful one! This evening, at the London Coliseum, the Ballet D'Art company is premiering a beautiful, mystical ballet - "Le Lac des Cygnes," or "The Lake of the Swans," by the illustrious Tchaikovsky. This, my dear readers, is an utterly enchanting and timeless piece! It features breathtakingly beautiful dances by ballerinas in exquisite, feathered tutus, a true symphony of movement. Can you imagine swirling around the stage in a gown of shimmering white feathers? Truly, I'd be practically levitating with delight!
Speaking of tutus, 1917 sees the continuation of the romantic ballet style, where tutus are just so grand, flowing, and absolutely bursting with grace. Picture layers of tulle billowing and floating – they’re truly breathtaking to behold, even today, although I’d certainly advocate a little extra pink for my own tastes!
Of course, being in London is all about fashion, and the elegance of the 1910s is simply stunning! You can't beat a touch of sparkle and shimmer - the beaded dresses, feather boas, and hats dripping in luxurious plumes... simply glorious! And, wouldn’t you know it, there’s an exclusive hat shop near my delightful Bloomsbury lodgings! A lovely shop, with a magnificent selection of feathers, furs and silken flowers to embellish my most fashionable ensembles. And what are hats without tutus to complement them?
Of course, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to immerse myself in the theatrical magic. My heart truly soared with the grace of the dancing ladies as I savoured a splendid performance of La Bayadere. Such stories of love, betrayal, and tragic fate! It truly captures the human experience, which I believe is at the heart of all true artistry. The story and the beautiful tutus! It's a true whirlwind of emotions. I'm truly spoilt for choice – even today, I find myself wandering through the vibrant streets of London, mesmerized by the dazzling vintage dress shops – there’s something utterly captivating about a beautifully-crafted vintage tutu, isn't there?
I do wish I could stay longer, to explore every nook and cranny of this bustling, energetic city – and to savour every sip of London fog – oh, how romantic and elegant! But my tutu calls me! The call to travel through time, and share more beautiful dance history with you. Stay tuned for next Tuesday's #TutuTuesday! Remember, a little pink tutu never goes amiss, darlings!
Until then, do enjoy the exquisite world of dance, fashion, and vintage finds. Until next Tuesday, keep twirling, dear ones!
Hugs & kisses,
Emma xx
P.S. Speaking of traveling, what would you choose to travel by? If I'm not taking my trusty old time machine, my preference would be by train! Imagine – sprawling landscapes flashing by the windows, the comforting rhythm of the wheels, and all those luxurious carriage compartments! Simply dreamy.
