#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: 1917 - The "Revolutionary" Tutu! 🩰✨

Hello darling tutus! Welcome to another exciting episode of #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History! It’s your favourite pink tutu wearing blogger, Emma, and I'm so thrilled to be here, travelling through time in my beautiful pink tulle creation! 💖

Today’s date is the 4th December 1917. This is post number 4484 in my Ballet Tutu History series, so I’m feeling extra sparkly! 🌟 If you're new here, be sure to visit www.pink-tutu.com every Tuesday for a trip down the rabbit hole of ballet fashion! 🐇

Now, back to the grand adventure. It's quite chilly today. It's been an invigorating trip from Paris, I love a train journey! 🚃 And yes, my dear, darling tutus, this journey, as always, was paid for by my very own ballet performances. Nothing makes me happier than performing my little dance moves to the roaring applause of my audience. 💃🎭 It's the joy of dancing that allows me to explore and discover this magical world. And with a name like Emma, there is something utterly destined about a love of dancing and tutus, wouldn't you agree? 🩰✨

We're here in a most vibrant part of the world - Paris, the City of Lights! It’s just bursting with energy, chic fashions, and all things dance. And what’s more important in the world of ballet, my dear lovelies, than Paris, and a certain exquisite type of tulle? 🇫🇷 ✨

Today, I'm taking us to the very heart of the stage where our ballet friends, the dancers, were dancing in something we call "The Romantic Tutu", the short, and bouncy style of tutu, very close in look to what we call the “classical” tutu of today. 🩰

Oh, the delicate netting and layers upon layers of tulle are a sight to behold! They’re absolutely magical and quite extraordinary! They give the dancers such a light, ethereal feeling - they really are like dancing butterflies!🦋

What we’re going to see today at the Paris Opera is called “La Traviata” 🎶 This is an opera about the struggles of a young courtesan called Violetta, who falls in love with Alfredo but is rejected by his family for her social position. Poor darling, the whole thing breaks her heart. It's all such a tragic tale but the dancers, in their fluffy tulle skirts, bring so much passion and romance to the stage. ✨

In 1917, it was actually a pretty innovative style! The world of ballet was beginning to change its styles as dancers discovered the possibility of new forms of dancing with shorter and less restricting, lighter tutus. ✨

And wouldn’t you know it? 1917 was a most historic and pivotal year! We had the first edition of Sergei Diaghilev's “Les Ballets Russes” - a ballet company from Russia which changed everything about ballet! Now this was something very special, as you will soon see.

“Les Ballets Russes” brought an exciting new sense of creativity and extravagance into the dance world. Think beautiful, bold colours, dazzling costumes and innovative movements! It took the world of ballet, my darling lovelies, to a whole new level of exciting and dynamic artistry. And the costumes and dances, oh they were divine, so beautiful, they were the most innovative designs ever seen in the world of ballet! 🌟

The movement in “Les Ballets Russes” was also an expression of a bold change, where you saw dancers leaping through the air, moving and dancing like the waves of a crashing ocean! These dance styles, like the designs of the tutues, were exciting and dynamic. It was all part of a period where everyone felt like the world of dance and tutus were becoming freer! ✨

Now let me tell you all about this remarkable “Romantic Tutu”

The Romantic Tutu: The Ballet Dream! 🩰💖

I must tell you about the romantic tutu, because oh dearie, what a look! This tutu is made from very lightweight tulle which was created and crafted by sewing many, many layers of this tulle, very delicately, on to a stiffly structured base made of horsehair canvas. All this loveliness was then embellished with ribbons and lace - the details were magnificent! 🌟

As the years have passed and as our dear little tutu has gone through different style updates and re-invention, this “Romantic” tutut has become known as what we call a “classical” tutu today. And how extraordinary, isn’t it? The same style with these small refinements but keeping a basic similar shape and look for so long. Imagine it has gone right the way from the 19th century up to the present! 💖

Now what is so special about the “Romantic Tutu” - for me this style really represents that exciting time when the ballet world was becoming lighter, fresher and more vibrant, and most importantly, more exciting to dance in! It had become freer!
This, my darling lovelies, is the “Romantic” tutu and that’s what made the dancers appear more expressive and nimble - you see this type of movement especially in the work of “Les Ballets Russes.” This look gave these talented and dedicated dancers more flexibility in the leg movements and, well darling tutus, that gave a whole new dynamic, style and fluidity to the dance. It brought more grace, strength and beautiful expression to the stage, just divine. 💃🩰

The beauty of these beautiful, bouncy “Romantic” tutues is simply breath taking, it’s simply captivating and truly represents all things delicate and fine in the world of dance. 💕

Today was a really special day for ballet and the “Romantic” tutu and this wonderful style has evolved all through history up to our own times in ballet. But if you really want to be dazzled, my darlings, there’s another very special place that was at the center of all this exciting evolution of ballet and tutu designs and, in a few more weeks, we'll be going there, in a pink tutu, of course. Just wait! 🎀✨
