#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: Post #4530 - October 22nd, 1918

Hello darlings! It's Emma, your resident Tutu Time Traveller, back from a whirlwind journey to the dazzling world of 1918. Let me tell you, it was a truly glorious trip, especially for a tutu enthusiast like me! Today, we're delving deep into the origins of this delightful garment, and discovering the fabulous fashions that adorned dancers a century ago.

As I always say, a journey through time is never complete without a fantastic frock, and 1918 had some seriously stylish ones! The ladies were absolutely rocking the 'Gibson Girl' look - think high-waisted skirts, ruffled blouses, and elegant hats that perched like delicate birds on their heads.

But even amongst the charming Edwardian attire, tutus were just beginning to blossom. At the beginning of the 20th century, ballet was changing - embracing new choreography and bolder movements, moving away from the Romantic ballets of yore.

And what does a new ballet style need? A new, daring look!

While dancers in 1918 hadn't yet reached the iconic tiered splendour of today's classical tutu, there were exciting innovations bubbling! They were moving away from the traditional roman de cour - those long, swirling skirts - and into a more structured, lightweight style, incorporating shorter, flowing lines and accents of tulle. Imagine tutus in delicate hues of lavender and blush pink, fluttering like silk in the breeze. It was the start of a revolutionary, beautiful transformation!

Oh, but the fashion in 1918 was absolutely exquisite! Everything seemed just so dapper - beautiful, luxurious fabrics, sleek lines, and a delicate air of sophistication. I absolutely fell in love with the elegant blouses and the exquisite hand-crafted jewellery - truly the peak of timeless elegance.

And, of course, a trip wouldn't be complete without a grand performance! Today, October 22nd, 1918, was a day for celebrating, the culmination of the 'Armistice Week' celebrations! The entire world was still reveling in the ending of World War One, a moment for remembrance, relief, and a touch of celebratory revelry.

As I took my place in the theatre, my pink tutu bouncing with excitement, I felt a real buzz of anticipation. A hush fell as the lights dimmed, and the stage was lit in a beautiful, ethereal glow. I could almost feel the air crackle with energy, with anticipation for what was about to come. The music rose, a symphony of joyful sound, and the curtains opened revealing... a glorious spectacle of dance!

Ballet, even a hundred years ago, was a magnificent way to express stories, emotions, and, of course, the beauty of human movement. As the dancers took the stage in their swirling tutus and elegant steps, I realised the captivating beauty of ballet - an art that truly transcended time.

Now, my dearest readers, my train departs in the morning, but don't you worry! I'll be back next week with more sartorial discoveries from my exciting time-travelling adventures. And until then, don't be afraid to twirl your way into the week, channeling your inner ballerina with a dash of pink tutu charm!

See you next Tuesday, and happy twirling!
