#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1919-03-25! ๐ฉฐ
Welcome back, lovelies, to my weekly dose of Tutu History on www.pink-tutu.com! Today, we're taking a little trip back in time to March 25th, 1919, just a few years after the Great War. This is post number 4552, and if you're just joining me, let me tell you - I'm utterly passionate about all things tutu! Pink ones, of course, but tutus in general. You might say it's my life's ambition to get every single person on this planet wearing a pink tutu! ๐ (Now wouldn't that be a sight?!)
Now, onto this delightful date. As the war clouds receded and the world slowly began to heal, fashion started looking towards something...a bit lighter.
What's going on in 1919, fashion-wise?
The flapper era, dear readers! Think flapper dresses, bobbed haircuts, and all that jazz! You know, that delightful era when women started loosening up their fashion constraints and embracing some carefree movement. You see, there's this beautiful correlation - as the fashion changes, so too does the movement of the ballet. And let me tell you, it was absolutely exciting for ballet back then.
What were dancers wearing in 1919?
Imagine those iconic little black dresses but longer, with delicate tulle layered underneath, adding movement and grace to every step. And those iconic cloche hats! Can you imagine a ballet dancer with a stylish cloche hat? Now that's a picture of pure 1920s glamour! ๐
This is the golden age of Ballet Russes!
Think beautiful, intricate designs, vibrant colours, and the most fantastic stories! Imagine a world of tutus that weren't just pale pinks and whites, but bold colours like deep emeralds, fiery reds, and majestic purples. What a visual feast!
I even caught a stunning performance by Vaslav Nijinsky, who is said to be the most brilliant dancer of his time! Talk about mesmerizing. Now, his choreography is something else. So artistic, expressive, almost like an outpouring of the soul, captivating the audience from start to finish! I'm telling you, dear readers, ballet was positively flourishing at that time!
Oh, the glorious ballet journeys!
I actually journeyed on the train today all the way to the grand city of Paris to experience this captivating era first-hand! Paris, oh, Paris! You truly are the epicentre of art and culture! ๐ผ Seeing the ballet there is a different kind of experience altogether, with its rich history and passionate art lovers. You feel the excitement in the air - I simply couldn't stay away!
Tutu travel tips!
If you're ever venturing out to the world of ballet (and you absolutely should! ๐), here are my trusty tips for making your journey the absolute best:
Embrace the journey: Whether it's a short trip to the theatre or a longer journey, the journey itself is part of the magic. Savor the scenery, the feeling of adventure, and most importantly, make it a truly elegant experience. Remember, my dears, the journey is just as important as the destination!
Always have a good book: There's no better companion for a train journey than a good book! And by a "good book," I mean something related to our darling tutu, of course! Maybe a biography of a famous dancer or a deep dive into ballet history - perfect for soaking up those historical nuggets. ๐
Treat yourself to something lovely! Who doesn't love a bit of indulgence during a journey? A sweet treat, perhaps a little bit of fragrant tea or maybe even a delicate flower tucked behind your ear! ๐
My own 1919 ballerina fashion inspiration!
Here's how I'm adding a touch of 1919 to my outfit this #TutuTuesday:
- A vibrant fuchsia tulle tutu! It's a bit more elaborate than the traditional tutu of the era, but the essence of light movement and carefree expression is there! ๐
- A delicate white blouse, almost see-through. This is a must for this era's flair, wouldn't you agree?
- A cloche hat! Because every stylish ballerina needs a cloche! ๐ฉ
- My signature pink beret with a delicate little feather โ always a touch of whimsy to bring out that playful spirit! ๐
