#TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History: September 23rd, 1919: A Whirlwind of Change!
Hello my darlings!
It’s your favourite pink-tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina, Emma, here, bringing you another instalment of my #TutuTuesday Ballet Tutu History series! Today, we're stepping back in time to September 23rd, 1919, a date bursting with energy and change! As always, I've hopped on the train (it's much more efficient for time travel, honestly!) to whisk you all back to the glittering heart of Paris, where ballet reigns supreme, tutus twirl with a flourish, and, well, the fashion scene is simply divine!
This is post number 4578 on my pink-tutu.com website. Can you believe we're getting to 5,000?! My #TutuTuesday journey is such a wonderful thing to be part of!
The Dance of Change:
Let me tell you, the air is positively electric in Paris today! A wave of change is washing over the world, with new ideals blossoming like flowers in spring. The First World War has just ended, bringing a sigh of relief to many, and the fashion scene is, to put it delicately, exploding. You've got the elegant ladies, who were used to wearing more restrictive clothing before the war, taking advantage of the freedom that came with changing fashion, sporting chic dresses with a flair. Then there's the modernes, who are flaunting their new, bold, and frankly daring styles. This revolution has made it into the world of ballet too!
Remember the restrictive, stiff corsets that dancers used to wear? Well, gone! You can almost hear the sigh of relief across the stage! The ballerina of today is more free-flowing, graceful, and truly feminine. Think movement, not constraint! This translates to our beloved tutus too. Gone are the overly long and complicated tutus with the many layers of tulle and netting that were so cumbersome to wear in earlier days. It’s all about a much simpler design, embracing the freedom to move with ease and grace. This new wave of style brings with it the iconic image of the ballerina we know and love today, the light and airy, flowing image of a true dancer. And who better to embody this grace than the legend, Anna Pavlova?
Speaking of legends…
The Pavlova Phenomenon:
On this very day, Anna Pavlova - the absolute star of the ballet world - takes to the stage here in Paris, and you can imagine how thrilling this is for the audience! They're clamouring for tickets to see her, a figure that embodies grace and artistry, truly at the top of her game. You see, Pavlova doesn't just perform; she inspires! It's not just about the skill, it's about the expression. And she does it with such beauty and a tenderness that's simply breathtaking. It’s a night of sheer magic as she twirls in those ever-so-soft tutus, each graceful step conveying a whirlwind of emotion and movement. If you're lucky enough to get a seat tonight, be sure to keep a watchful eye for the little flutter of her white dress that's almost a signature by now, such a perfect representation of her artistry. It's a moment, an era of transformation, and every Parisian with a love of art is soaking it all in!
Beyond the Stage:
It's not just ballet where change is stirring, but everywhere! Look at the fashions, the clothing stores are brimming with stylish dresses! Even our favourite shops are selling boules, you know, the French versions of our beloved tutus - quelle surprise! Even on this crisp autumn day, you see them popping out everywhere: a flash of pink, a sprinkle of sparkle! People are incorporating the spirit of ballet into their everyday outfits! And trust me, with so many options to choose from, even my time-travelling self has a hard time choosing! Oh la la, a fashion emergency of the best kind!
A Night at the Theatre:
As we head to the theater for this evening's performance, I simply have to take a moment to admire my new outfit! I’m rocking my pale pink tutu - with a splash of gold sequins, of course! It wouldn't be Tutu Tuesday without a touch of glam, right? I paired it with my trusty lace-up ankle boots and my new fluffy pink coat – you'll just have to trust me when I say the outfit was absolutely divine! We even took a peek at the lovely new Chatelet theater. Isn't it spectacular?! You'd love it here, the very air itself thrums with the energy of the arts! I can just picture my fellow tutu-wearing friends dancing around under the chandeliers – talk about a party!
Tutu Inspirations:
For my fellow fashion enthusiasts, and of course all my pink-tutu.com fans! Why don't we start making a real statement about our passion for ballet and tutus?! Maybe incorporate a splash of ballet elegance into our everyday style! What do you say? We could start a trend, I mean, honestly, you look absolutely divine in a pink tutu, so why not let the world know it! I have a whole slew of ideas I’m eager to share about making tutus not just for dancing but a part of everyday life! Don’t worry, we'll have time to talk about that later, because now it’s time for the show, and it looks absolutely spectacular.
As for me, well, I have to go. That glorious rush of anticipation of a new show never gets old! So, join me in wishing Pavlova all the best for tonight's performance, and until next time, darlings, remember, we're all part of the tutu-loving world, and anything is possible when we put our minds and our feet together!
See you next #TutuTuesday, where we’ll continue to explore the fabulous world of tutus together!
Love, Emma
