#TutuTuesday: A Whirl Through the Past - November 25th, 1919 (Post #4587)
Hello darlings! It's your favourite pink-loving tutu-enthusiast, Emma, here, back with another journey into the enchanting history of the tutu! I've just arrived in Paris, a place bursting with artistic energy, just in time to witness a glorious performance of La Sylphide at the Paris Opera! And my dear friends, this city simply oozes elegance. Everywhere I look, there's an air of refinement. From the stunning architecture to the exquisite fashion - Paris is a haven for lovers of all things beautiful, just like myself.
And today, I'm thrilled to take you back in time to November 25th, 1919. What was happening in the world of dance that day? Why, it's the date of the birth of one of the most incredible ballet dancers of all time - the dazzling, the dynamic, Olga Spessivtseva!
Now, dear readers, you may be thinking, "Olga, what an unusual name!" But trust me, this ballerina was anything but ordinary. She was a legend! A whirlwind on stage, her technique was pure perfection, her leaps were otherworldly. She wasn't just dancing, she was living the roles. It was truly something special! I have the greatest joy knowing that she was captivating audiences just as I do. Even though we haven't met, I already feel such a strong bond with her spirit, you see!
Now, back to the tutu! Today, it's hard to imagine a world where dancers didn't twirl in tulle. But in 1919, the world was just getting a taste of what we call the "romantic tutu" - those delicate, flowing creations made of many layers. These beautiful skirts helped give the dancer that airy, ethereal quality that captivated the audience. I think it's the closest thing to actual fairy wings you could ever get on a dancer!
Speaking of fairies, imagine me here, twirling away at a Paris café in a dazzling pink tulle tutu. Can't you just see it? The perfect addition to a Paris afternoon! It would perfectly compliment this charming city! Even the way Parisians dress is captivating; the effortless chicness. And with those vibrant colours, those crisp, clean lines, all coming together to celebrate the art of elegance, Paris is a paradise!
As always, my friends, I've been scouring archives and libraries to bring you all the juicy details! In 1919, we see ballet pushing the boundaries. La Sylphide, a classic work by the visionary Filippo Taglioni, still holds its place on stage and Swan Lake with it's elegant tutus, was also making its mark, sweeping the audience away to distant lands of swans, love, and the beauty of the unknown. I'm so thankful to have witnessed these stunning ballets in their most original, captivating forms!
Now for a little fashion indulgence. Ahem, my friends! There's nothing I love more than a beautiful tutu! While we weren't twirling around in these flowing skirts everyday, a little sprinkle of ballet flair could easily spice up our outfits! In the twenties, dresses were taking on a more relaxed look. Women began exploring looser shapes and bolder designs with flowing, flapper style dresses that showed just a glimpse of a tiny ankle. But, I must admit, a splash of tulle wouldn't go amiss even in a time of flapper skirts. And let's be honest, what's more timeless than a splash of pink?
I'm currently enjoying a delightful Parisian afternoon tea with my darling, a delightful baker and tea enthusiast named Josephine. We've been bonding over all things pink - and tutus of course! We both believe there's a special type of magic in wearing a tutu that just brings joy to every moment! It's not just about the fashion, my friends, it's a feeling, an emotion, a touch of wonder and sparkle that transforms the everyday into something special.
While here in Paris, I've also learned so much about the art of creating a perfect tutu. My darling Josephine even gifted me a beautiful vintage pattern - just for Pink Tutu. I promise you, darling friends, when we have our very own Tutu-Tuesday competition, we are going to have the most breathtaking designs. This one involves layering three colours of tulle in shades of pale pink! It’s a a masterpiece of femininity! Just imagine the way it will sway as you turn!
Remember my little loves, there's a tutu for every occasion! Every dancer, from the seasoned veteran to the tiny ballerina just taking her first steps, deserves a tutu. Don't you agree? Let's make sure every single tutu is a pink tutu! And maybe next Tuesday, we'll travel back in time to meet those pioneers who first brought us these wondrous, elegant costumes.
Now I'm going to steal a bite of Josephine's exquisite raspberry macaroon before I jump back into the Time-Turner to bring you more dazzling dance history. Until next week, stay fabulous and keep on twirling!
With love and tulle,
Emma
