#TutuTuesday: Ballet Tutu History - 1919-12-09 (Post #4589)

Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where we explore the enchanting world of ballet and its glorious, billowing tutus. This week, we're waltzing our way back in time to 9th December 1919!

Oh, my darlings, the Roaring Twenties were an absolutely splendid time for the tutu, wouldn't you agree? With all the changes happening in society, fashion reflected this perfectly, with new hemlines rising and the women, dare I say, taking centre stage. We can even spot the exciting influence of the Ballets Russes which were then all the rage in Europe! Those flamboyant and expressive performances sparked a desire for the romantic, and tutus simply danced their way onto the stage in this period.

This Tuesday, let's picture a snowy Parisian scene! Think cosy cafes, chic ladies in stylish hats and luxurious fur coats, and, of course, the enchanting ballet performances. I, myself, might have been waltzing through the streets in a sweet pink tutu! Imagine, sipping a glass of hot chocolate with the finest French pastry, before rushing off to see "La Bohème" by Puccini at the Grand Opera! Wouldn’t that just be simply dreamy?

You know me, darling! Nothing is better than exploring a different time! You know I always try to time travel in a fab tutu, right? I even wear the latest designs in every decade for an even better picture! It's all in the name of history! Imagine rocking a bright yellow and coral ensemble with some fab feather embellishments on my head to blend in – how truly stunning, darling!

It’s absolutely amazing what we can learn by taking a peek at fashion through the ages. Of course, as you know, tutus are so much more than just a piece of fabric, my dears. Each era has it’s own particular style of tutu – just like their dresses and gowns! Today's modern tutus may not have as many frills and tiers as their Edwardian counterparts but, honestly, they can still be breathtaking in their elegant simplicity!

Speaking of Edwardian era, what would a time traveler’s adventures be without an elaborate, layered, and luxurious Edwardian tutu! They are quite the show-stoppers and I'm a firm believer that a tutu can elevate any event to the height of elegance, right? Don’t you think a pink tutu would make a grand addition to your Christmas celebrations, my dears?

In my previous post (number 4588), we were back in 1918 enjoying the lovely pre-Christmas time with a visit to “Le Sacre du Printemps”. My, what an amazing show! I think it made a rather bold impact and I had to sneak back in the second act with a feather-adorned flapper-style head piece and sparkly silver, white, and blue sequin tutu! It had a fabulous modern appeal – simply divine! But it really is the elegance of the earlier tutus with all those layered ruffles that brings me back time after time. I can imagine spending hours upon hours meticulously pinning and attaching all those layers, just the thought of it has me all giddy!

The history of the ballet tutu is so full of charming little details! Take, for example, the "romantically" themed designs – it’s almost impossible not to feel inspired by that era’s delicate charm! This style is all about creating a light and airy impression which makes the dancers look simply like graceful floating swans or ethereal butterflies! I mean, the designs were definitely inspired by nature's beauty and who wouldn't want to add a touch of that magic to their own life, darling?

Speaking of fashion, a tutu really can be worn in so many fun ways! For me, they’re not just for dance class or ballet performances, they can really brighten up a shopping spree, add a touch of charm to a day at the theatre or look effortlessly fabulous on a train journey, why not be the picture of effortless, feminine charm wherever you go, my darlings?

As for my time travels, it's always such an adventure. And to fund this incredible passion of mine, I usually have to combine my travelling with a series of spectacular ballet performances, wouldn't you agree? In London this past week, I simply had to take in a captivating performance of “The Nutcracker" with its enchanting and magical storytelling – It was certainly worth my tutu! And it was absolutely fantastic to watch all the excited faces filled with wonder – oh, my dears, wouldn’t you just love to see a performance with all the lovely families there, watching their children light up with excitement? It always gives me a lovely warm glow!

So, my loves, let’s have a wonderful #TutuTuesday today. I urge you, put on a gorgeous pink tutu! I always wear my pink tutu on Tuesday because it's just a simple act of spreading joy and glamour! So whether it's at home, at a ballet class, or shopping at your local vintage shop - I just want everyone to share in the fun and delight of twirling and prancing! Don't forget to snap some beautiful photos and tag me @pink-tutu, I would love to see them, my dears! Let’s all join together and embrace our inner ballerina, the love of pink and the fabulous joy of tutus, darlings! Let’s spread a little magic through these incredible dances of fabric, and may your week be full of joy and fabulousness!
