#TutuTuesday: A Peek into the Past - June 14th, 1921! 🩰✨
Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu-wearing, time-traveling ballerina, back for another exciting installment of #TutuTuesday! Today, we're taking a little trip back in time, all the way to the 14th of June, 1921, for a glimpse at the wonderful world of ballet in that era. Buckle up, my dears, it's going to be a glamorous journey!
Before we start, just a little housekeeping – this is post number 4668 on my pink-tutu.com blog, and you know I love it when you let me know what you think in the comments below! 🥰
Stepping back in time...
My oh my, 1921! What a fascinating time for ballet. Just imagine, darling, ladies were starting to break free from the restrictive styles of the Victorian era, and the world of fashion was undergoing a wonderful transformation. The silhouette of the 'Roaring Twenties' was taking shape – all sleek lines, shorter hemlines, and a move towards looser, more comfortable clothes. The dancing world was following suit!
Think swirling flapper dresses, darling, all shimmering beads and feather boas, inspiring the lightness and movement of the dancers onstage. The dancers themselves, my dears, were adopting a new approach to costume design, a far cry from the elaborate and cumbersome costumes of the past.
You see, tutus were still making their way into the world as we know them, darling, with a definite focus on classical elegance and beautiful lines. Imagine tutus, oh, so floaty and ethereal, crafted from fine silk or tulle. These graceful, flowing creations perfectly complimented the intricate choreography of the era.
Paris, my fashion haven!
As a passionate lover of all things ballet and beautiful, you won't be surprised to learn that I made a bee-line straight to Paris. Oh, the fashion houses! The cobbled streets! It was a time of absolute creative explosion, darling. Every day seemed like a beautiful dance, with new fashions, new movements, and of course, new ballet shows to see!
Oh, darling, just the mention of those shows brings back all the glorious memories! From the grand theatre halls, the opulent costumes, the powerful dancers and, of course, the music... the sheer artistry was incredible! I just adored seeing these beautiful ballerinas gliding across the stage with such effortless grace.
The ballet I saw this week…
As it happens, on the 14th of June, 1921, a brand new production of "The Sleeping Beauty" was premiering at the Opéra Garnier in Paris! Imagine, my dears, the sheer opulence, the magical fairytale setting. I've been lucky enough to catch the show during one of my trips - just a bit of time-travel tourism, darling, you know how I love a good historical ballet fix!
The costumes! Exquisite. The storybook enchantment. And, of course, the legendary ballet blanc, with its elegant tutus and the pure, white light... Ah, pure magic! Just imagine that white tulle against the dark wood and golden details of the theatre... You see why, darling, I had to pop back in time and catch this absolute gem of a show!
Let's talk tutus, darling...
Remember those graceful tutus we were talking about, the ones worn by the dancers in "Sleeping Beauty"? While not quite the full, voluminous, dramatic tutus you might see today, darling, they were starting to adopt the shapes and styles that would come to be synonymous with ballet. The fabric, darling, a bit like a dream... Imagine delicate silk or shimmering tulle. You see, the dance of the times was changing, and the dancers were demanding outfits that allowed for more movement and lightness.
My latest pink tutu:
Oh, and my lovely dears, you won't believe what I managed to snag during my Paris trip! I found this adorable, ruffled, pale pink tutu... you see, my penchant for the pink is a lifelong passion... and I couldn't resist snapping it up! I know you'll all want to see it - maybe a little photo-shoot for the next #TutuTuesday? Let me know if you'd love to see it, darlings!
Time to make my own fashion statement…
But you know me, darling, always a fan of creating my own spin on things. While I adored those delicate silk tutus, I thought, 'why not have a bit of fun?' So, I found this incredible fabric shop, just bursting with sequins and feathers, oh darling! I was completely captivated, and let me tell you, it inspired a whole new range of creations for me.
I know, you're all probably thinking, what would a pink-tutu wearing time traveller do with all those sequins? Well, my darling, think pink tutu with sequins, of course! You know how I like to turn heads and shake things up in the world of ballet.
What are we going to be wearing in the next few years?
Now, my darlings, imagine the evolution of dance and fashion, with all these new ideas bubbling to the surface! Can you envision, in a few years time, those stunning tulle tutus becoming the staple of the stage, a perfect embodiment of grace and artistry?
And think about it, darling. In a few years time, think of the designs! With sequins, feathers and a touch of sparkle – that, my lovelies, is something truly special! So, are you ready to embrace the changing trends of ballet and make a bold statement with your own pink tutus?
As for me, my loves, I have a whole world of pink to explore, both past, present and future. I'll be back next week, my dears, ready for another amazing adventure with more time-travelling tutus and plenty more history.
