Tutu Tuesday #4707: A Trip Back to 1922! π
Hello my darling Tutu Twirlers! π
It's me, Emma, back from another adventure in the fascinating world of tutu history. This week, my time machine whisked me away to a vibrant 14th of March, 1922. I must say, darling, this trip was quite the treat for a vintage-loving ballerina like me! π©°
As the steam engine chugged me towards Paris, a city where even the air seems to buzz with creative energy, I envisioned myself stepping out of the train in a fluffy, pink tutu. Ah, but this time, practicality reigned! It was far too chilly for a flimsy pink tutu, even in a glamorous metropolis like Paris. π₯Ά So I bundled up in my favourite vintage fur coat, a bit of an extravagance, I confess! π€« It paired beautifully with a silken rose-coloured dress and my trusty Mary Jane shoes. β¨
I was immediately enchanted! This 1920s Paris was a feast for the senses! My eyes devoured the art deco architecture, the lively street markets overflowing with Parisian charm, and the beautifully dressed ladies β their fashion was a study in elegance and sophistication! π The fashion back then really was something else, darling! The women were embracing this chic, rebellious style that included bold, short skirts and knee-high boots, a real step away from the more elaborate silhouettes of the Victorian era! π You know I had to stop by some vintage boutiques for a little look, but sadly no pink tutus in sight β unless you count a feathery boa as a tutu substitute.
What did capture my attention was the dance world of 1922. It was a fascinating blend of traditional ballets, experimental pieces and a growing popularity for new forms of dance, particularly American Jazz dance! π And the costumes? Iβm sure you'll be relieved to hear the classic tulle tutus werenβt quite dominating the stage yet. I'm seeing elaborate bodices with more streamlined skirts - a glimpse into what our iconic tutu shapes would eventually evolve from!
Oh! I nearly forgot β 14th March, 1922 was a very important day in history! It marked the 25th birthday of the very brilliant, very iconic ballerina, Anna Pavlova! π Now there's a dancer whose life story just begs to be told. A pioneering artist whose elegance and expressive movements were unlike anything seen before. She truly pushed boundaries! She embraced experimental ballet pieces with the same fiery passion as her interpretations of the classical masterpieces. Talk about an inspiration! π
Sadly, I didnβt have time to take a ballet class in 1922. It seemed I had only just arrived and already it was time for me to travel back to the present. However, this glimpse back in time provided an insightful look into the exciting period just before the true rise of the tutu. π©° Letβs just say the foundation for our iconic garment was firmly set. And I have a feeling the future was holding exciting possibilities!
My time machine awaits. Until next week, dear Tutu Twirlers! π Remember: If you're not rocking pink, you're missing out on life's little thrills! π
