This week, we're stepping into the fabulous Roaring Twenties, a decade dripping in glitz and glamour. So, grab your champagne flute, darlings, because today’s trip is going to be a truly dazzling one!

(For all those joining me for the first time, I’m Emma, a Derbyshire girl with a passion for pink tutus and a love of all things ballet. I travel the world, exploring its history one tutu at a time! Now, back to our roaring journey! On March 28th, 1922, the world was abuzz with exciting developments. The very first edition of The Reader’s Digest was published in the US, offering digested snippets of everything from literature to the world of science. Talk about keeping up with the times!

Meanwhile, over in Germany, the German Weimar Republic was trying its hand at making the nation more democratic, whilst, on this day, people gathered in Washington D.C. for the inaugural Cherry Blossom Festival. (Oh, how I’d love to have twirled amongst the pretty blossoms in my pinkest tutu!) But amidst these monumental happenings, a tutu revolution was taking shape on the ballet stage.

What was this revolution, you ask? Well, let’s travel back in time and take a look. The Roaring Twenties, famously known for its carefree spirit, was changing more than just women’s hairstyles! You know those long, sweeping gowns that once dominated ballet performances? Well, they were starting to shrink.

You see, darling, ballet costumes were already undergoing a transformation at this time, driven by the emerging popularity of "Ballet Russes", led by the ingenious Serge Diaghilev. Now, he certainly knew how to stage a spectacle – a blend of theatrical brilliance, art, and music - but most importantly, he wasn't afraid to challenge fashion norms! It was him, really, who breathed life into the iconic tutu that we know and adore. He even used these revolutionary tutus as part of his ballet staging! He's the man behind these fabulous innovations, pushing the boundaries of ballet and its aesthetics - what a visionary!

Imagine this: sleek, short skirts, often adorned with stunning embellishments - sequins, feathers, a sprinkle of rhinestones… and dare I say, even the occasional hint of pink (don’t worry, we’ll get to those details!). Now, that's a revolution! And with a shorter, tighter, more dramatic tutu, ballerinas could express themselves in ways they couldn’t even dream of before! The fluidity and the agility became apparent to the world. And all this against a backdrop of soaring music - the ballet became the ultimate visual spectacle, didn’t it, dear?

Of course, with these fabulous transformations came exciting new interpretations and stories. It was a new era for ballerinas, a time when they could really own their artistry, showcasing strength, elegance, and a hint of daring, all rolled into one. Just picture the world's best ballerinas strutting their stuff, captivating the world, in these bold new costumes. And you know, dear, I can’t resist a little daydreaming myself - I picture the likes of Vaslav Nijinsky or Anna Pavlova pirouetting on the stage, surrounded by their glittering, twirly tutus, inspiring an audience to gasp and cheer, all while radiating pure, flawless artistry.

You know, darling, this evolution wasn’t all smooth sailing, of course! These shortened tutus certainly generated their fair share of whispers and controversy. After all, we were stepping into a brand-new, vibrant, daring era for fashion, and, well, change doesn’t always happen without a little murmur. But what matters most is that this evolution led to some of the most iconic tutu designs of the 20th century, tutus that are now forever etched in our ballet history.

So, as we reminisce on this delightful, revolutionary period, let’s all raise our champagne flutes and give a hearty toast to the courageous designers and artists who dared to push boundaries! For their innovative spirit lives on in every twirl, every arabesque, and every pirouette performed to this day. And who knows? Maybe this inspiring spirit even encourages a few fashion enthusiasts like myself to embrace our inner ballerina, with a pink tutu on our shoulders!

Until next week, remember to spread a little bit of tutu magic wherever you go! Remember, dear, you are your own beautiful creation - so twirl with joy, twirl with confidence, twirl with pink!

Yours in twirls, Emma x

**(And hey, I almost forgot! This Friday, my friends at the ballet school in Paris have invited me to a special gala - they're recreating one of the famous Ballet Russes pieces! I can’t wait to share photos and all the details with you! Until then, you can keep up with all the exciting things I’m doing through the pink-tutu.com website!)
